Can anyone advise me how to get arround a problem with a compaq deskpro Ep.
It needed windows ME re-installed. But having tried it reboots when it is
near to completion.
Haven't a clue why and of course I don't have the original restore CD

I had a similar problem a while ago when I tried to reinstall '98 on a
machine with faulty memory - it would reboot or crash at random stages
of the install (worst weekend of my life, 22 attempts at installing
'doze ending in failure, and had me baffled at the time).

My first port of call would be to try running Memtest86

Thanks for your prompt response
Ran memory diags and no problems found.
However, there seems to be a known problem from Compaq about this machine
rebooting continuously on a re-install.
The only problem is to get the fix you have to ring there support centre.
Not useful as I need to fix it urgently.

So if anyone has a lead to a link to get this solution. I would be grateful
to hear from you.

Thanks again for your help

After RAM, the possible causes are a bad hard drive, or a bad cd-rom.
Leaning toward bad hard drive.

Download the hard drive manufacturer's utility for diagnosing your
hard drive.
