Hello

I need a hardware-based, ie. non-(soft | win)modem PCI board
so I can use it under Linux.

Does someone know of an up-to-date list of the few models still sold?
I know that Zoom makes one. Do you know of other brands?

Otherwise, if you know of controller-less models that run reliably
under Linux, I'm also interested.

Thank you.

Real hardware controller based - not many. Anything with a Lucent Venus
chipset or TOPIC TP560i/9922S14 chipset. There is also the series of
US Robotics modems - 3CP2976, 3CP2977 3CP3298, 3CP5609, 3CP5610, 3CP5612
and similar.

Rob Clark's old 'Winmodems are not modems' web page is still available,
but I don't think it's been updated since 2002 - you can thank spammers
for that.

Your access to google is broken? You can do the same thing we were doing
before Rob Clark started his web page. Go to your favorite store and make
an accurate list of each make and model number of the modems they have for
sale. Then search google for that and the word 'Linux". For example

Web Results 1 - 10 of about 1,700 for 3CP5610 Linux. (0.18 seconds)

Web Results 1 - 10 of about 56,200 for Lucent+Venus Linux. (0.15
seconds)

Looking at the PCI IDs list (http://pciids.sourceforge.net/pci.ids - use
a wide terminal over 120 characters wide to avoid line wrap) has some
indications. but is not as reliable at the Rob Clark web page. The
Modem-HOWTO (updated ten weeks ago in January) is also fairly good.

Thanks. I'll check it out.

Thank you.

it's so easy with an external serial. just link /dev/modem to
/dev/ttyS0, and configure pppd / wvdial / whatever.

and if you have interest in BeOS, freebsd, whatever, it's also easy in
those OS.
