|
|
I am new to SCSI, just bought an external SCSI device(DLT Tape
drive.), I have a windowsXP based PC. With the provided driver CD, i
have installed the device. it shows as "Media storage" in "computer
management", and shows as "tape drive" in "device manager", and status
as "working", but it is not showing in "my computer". it is not being
recognized by backup software like Nero either.(that was the sole
purpose of buying it). However, it is being recognized by some other
software like Adobe Encore(DVD authoring software), but I have no clue
how to access the device to get or save data from/to it.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Try the built-in backup utility in Windows XP.
"Start", "Accessories", "System Tools", "Backup".
You should be able to select the tape drive as backup destination

Thanks for the info Rob, but I fear in my XP home edition, I dont have
that option, even if I do, how can I retrive data from the tape in
case I need? As it is not showing in "my computer" as drive, I could
not figure out, how to see the files that is saved in that tape:(
Any idea?
Thanks |

Tape drives never show up as regular drives in "My Computer". They are not
accessible through explorer, just through a backup/restore program. Since
your home edition doesn't have the backup utility you will need to buy one
that supports your drive. Check out BackupExec or Novaback. Or consider
selling the drive again and buy a removable harddisk instead.

Tape drives do not work like regular drives. A Hard Disk has the ability to
read any data off any position, where as a tape the data is stored
sequentially. There did use to be a program to allow you to use a tape like
a hard disk, but I do not believe it's supported or works with xp anyway.
As Rib says, you will requie a backup/restore application that will allow
you to copy files from your HD to Tape, then if needed back from Tape to HD.
What are you trying to achieve?

As already said, tape drives do not normally appear as a drive letter
since it's normally used in a sequential manner.
Similarly, the serial and parallel ports are not drive letters
because they're not normally used that way
(well, unless you have a floppy/Zip/CD drive attached
with the proper drivers).
For free software, try
http://www.cygwin.com/
GNU/Linux/Unix tape standards such as TAR are supported,
thus letting you create and read tapes in open-standard formats.
