|
|
I wonder how many of you are like me ... still waiting for the Vista Upgrade
promised with my new computer bought last December.
I first applied for it on January 15th and subsequently had to jump through
multiple hoops of providing COA numbers, proof of purchase and all of that.
It took weeks to confirm that my application for upgrade was valid. I got an
e-mail notice saying so and a statement that the next e-mail I would get
would be notice of shipping.
After several inquiries about what was holding things up now, I get an email
today saying "We are currently in the process of preparing your Express
Upgrade to ensure your transition to Windows VistaT is as seamless as
possible. We will begin shipping orders beginning the week of March 26, 2007
for customers who have fully-completed the Express Upgrade process. Due to
the volume of orders we have received, it may take several weeks after that
date before your order will ship."
What a way to run a railroad! 3 months+ later and no upgrade - and no
assurance that I'll see it for weeks more yet. The program ends in May!
You'd think it might be a Microsoft problem but the email was signed by
Gateway. Denzil. |

I am still waiting for my new computer ordered on March 2d and the
reason being compatibility with the computer and Vista. While my
expectations were for fast delivery I appreciated the fact that they
seemed more interested in customer satisfaction. Don't know why they
are holding up the Vista update other than making sure it will work when
installed, I am sure that you would want that also. Maybe that would be
a good reason for the delay? Just a guess on my part of course! Best
of luck and hopefully we both will be enjoying the new software and
computers.

As a happy GW customer - but have not bought a new one in 3-4 years - I am
not happy with this thread. I want to buy a new computer in a few months
and was waiting through the Vista transition, not because of the time factor
here, but just in case severe bugs were found and corrected. This instance
sounds like poor planning on GW's part. It is not like Vista just showed up
at their doorstep.

Computer manufactures have had Vista for some weeks however they are smart
enough not to release it to the public yet as they do not want to deal with
the support calls and computer returns resulting from people not being able
to use their applications with Vista. It takes time for the program vendors
to update their apps. so they run properly under Vista and save yourself the
headaches of getting your applications to work correctly under Vista. My
advice, get a copy of Vista and install it on another machine and be sure it
will work for you before you plan to make the big switch. Vista makes
Millennium look like a "Crown Jewel" at this point.

Part of this can be attributed to Microsoft's strongarm tactics with its OEM
computer manufacturers. Betcha if one of us could read the contract for copies
of Windows between Microsoft and Gateway, it would give Microsoft the right to
so most anything with its operating system and all of its versions. Read that
as "Ship Vista or nothing." In other words, Microsoft pulled the plug on
nearly all shipments of computers with XP shortly after the official launch date
of Vista.
At this point, I do not think that Gateway is well-heeled enough or staffed with
the right engineers to spend serious money testing with Vista themselves,
relying instead on outside contractors, like they do for many other functions.

Brings back to me: should next computer be GW or Dell? First time my |
new computer need is software driven. My main machine is an older GW
with unsupported Win98. Bought XP but decided not to jump through
upgrade hoops. Now MS will not give current IE and TurboTax required
XP to run - put on wife's machine. Which way is a customer, who is
not primarily a computer person, to go?

sells the raw laptop boxes to stuff all the Micro guts into.
But if you can repair them, my hat's off to you. All I have ever done

else but some Delhi resident speaking as if he was from GW) and
replace the onboard battery (which is under the keyboard).
My English Speaking White Box builder/supporter also repairs laptops.
Big business for him with most of the people that have given up on
getting any satisfaction out of the Sales and Marketing firms that
stuck a big hard one up their arses.
BTW, I am going to be buying a replacement battery for my 450SX4
Laptop. I'm going to get a "refill" from:
http://www.batteryrefill.com/laptops/gateway/450series.phtml?gclid=CIrq-o_2n4gCFQk8UAodlloELw
If you look at the URL, you can see that they offer an 11.1 Volt 6
Cell and a 14.8 Volt 8 Cell Battery. Does it matter which one I get?
In other words if the OEM is an 11.1 Volt 6 Cell, can I replace it
with the 14.8 Volt 8 Cell which I assume would have more bang for the
buck than the 11.1 Volt 6 Cell battery.
And, I have no idea which one that $79 - Special Sale "Refill" battery
is.

What? You don't know what a battery refill is? You just twist off the cap and
pour in the new juice. I thought everyone knew this. :>)
There are lotsa other CEMs out there, more prominent than you mentioned:

Gateway is definitely using some second-tier (third-tier?) or "emerging" CEMs.
None of the ones Stan mentioned are household names in the industry, except
Sampo, which once sold monitors with its brand name back in the '90s.

According to MaximumPC Magazine, these were listed as "some" of the
computer manufacturers most of the Sales and Marketing firms
pretending to make computers are having their names stamped on. The
two mentioned Indian Outsource centers pretending to offer tech
support were listed as the two major players in that area. The
article went on and discussed about the two class action law suits
that were brought against GW a couple of years back for advertisements
suggesting that the boxes with their name slapped on the front were
being manufactured by them and being manufactured in North American
factories and supported by tech centers in North America. Notice that
you don't see those type of deceptive ads any more? This was around
the same time that I watched an investigative program on one of the
cable news networks (forget which one) where they went into an Indian
Call Center training area where they were training them in how to
speak English with certain North American Regional dialects along with
regional knowledge. Example, one class was teaching them to speak
English with a slight "Southern" bend to it and then giving them
geographical knowledge of the Atlanta area so if asked by the pigeon
with the problem PC about where they were located. They were NOT
being taught about troubleshooting PC's.... That was not as important
as teaching them how to fake a North American caller into thinking
they were talking to someone from their own hemisphere. And believe
it or not, they showed some of them talking and if you were not
getting a visual of them while they were talking, you would swear they
were good ole boys and girls from the southeastern US. The report
said that they also train them in other regional dialects and
geographical knowledge.

I bought a new white box cp from a local store in January with XP installed
and with a certificate for a Vista upgrade included. Sent the certificate
to an address in Tempe, AZ and have my Vista upgrade DVD finally. Cost me
$60.49 and it's only good to upgrade from XP as opposed to ones in Wal-Mart
that can be used to upgrade from most any Windows version. After reading
about the problems people are having with Vista wish I had saved my money -
XP is just fine.
