Hi all I'm new here so if I ask anything that might have been answered a dozen times please forgive my naivety.
Ok two things really, firstly I have a 540 1.3ghz celeron emachine but the power supply was faulty so I took the motherboard out and put into a bigger tower because the power supply was a micro and quite costly to replace plus I had a healthy but bigger power supply to run it but it would not fit in the emachines case, no problem all workin except I want to add an ethernet card as it only has a dial up modem on the board. Problem is it does not want to boot now, but if I take the ethernet card out and then take the battery out for the 30 seconds and replace it boots up fine. Any ideas how I can add this new hardware, the ethernet card is working in the other pc, but as soon as I add any sort of hardware alien to that machine it just does nothing.
Also I'm after the jumper settings for this machine regarding the on and off button and reset switch positioning on the board, although it still switches on automatically without it would be nice to have control from the front of the machine. Thanks for any help you maybe to able to offer on this.
Best

| lol, uh, your info was a little difficult to follow, but I guess what you really need now is how to get your ethernet card working. It sounds like there is a conflict with another peice of hardware. I don't know what is where and with what, in your computer, but suffice it to say.... take out all excess hardware. Take your motherboard (MB), and connect it so that it will run, then connect just the bare necessities of life: your floppy drive, a cd-rom drive, power supply, RAM (if you have 4 sticks, try using only 2), Video Card, and Hard drive (only one, and that one being the HD with your operating system on it). Try booting it up. If you have any problems with just that.... try tinkering around a little until it works. Get this setup working just fine, and then later we'll add the other cards in one by one. After you insert the first card (which should probably be your ethernet card) work with the computer for a while, and check to see if anything goes wrong. Once you have the basic system + ethernet setup and working just fine.... try to get your internet connection working. I assume that since you want to add an ethernet card that you have a broadband connection (DSL, Cable, etc). Get your internet working so that you can download any drivers you might need. Once this is all working, you can start adding any other cards you have. If you add a card and you find the problem is happening again, take that card out, get on the internet, find the latest driver for the problematic card, and also try to find the latest drivers for any other components you have. Try updating your BIOS too. Add the problem card in again, and it probably should work. post back with any comments or questions. |
