|
|
Someone gave me a Gateway solo 9550 computer. They simply said it didn't
work and I could have it if I wanted. Not knowing what they meant by
"doesn't work", I brought it home. Well - they were exactly correct -
doesn't turn on.
First of all, has anyone come across any directions for taking this
particular model apart? Is there a better newsgroup to go with these
questions?
Sometimes when I plug it in, the 3rd light - hotswap indicator is red
(orange?). However, if I plug it in and out - then sometimes the battery
light is orange (maybe red? but looks orange) whether the battery is in or
out AND the power light is on (green) AND the hotswap indicator is OFF
(directions say it should always be on - either green or orange).
If I push the power button (or the reset on the bottom), nothing happens -
can hear nothing happening at all.
Is there ANY chance that it is simply the power connector inside that has
gone bad? Is there anyway to test?
<G>Prolly should not even be fooling with this, but thought maybe there was
a chance I could rescue it with little cost .......
TIA

I forgot to mention - the lights I am talking about are on the OUTSIDE
front of the notebook. No lights come on at all INSIDE.

I have worked on several Gateway Solo 9500 (very similar) and 9550 notebooks.
There is no repair manual for them. The best you can do is download a short
document that shows how to remove the keyboard, which I did to repair a 9500. To
disassemble the rest, remove all the screws and see what comes apart. Be
careful not to fracture any of the plastic parts, which often snap into place
and break easily if flexed wrongly. In my opinion, disassembly and repair of
notebook computers is a lot more difficult than desktops. Lots of tiny screws.
Many non-standard parts. And no repair manual adds to the difficulty.
Whereabouts are you located? Somewhere in the Eastern Time Zone (US), I would
guess.
If you don't want to mess with it, I'm willing to pay you a few bucks for it
plus shipping (unless you are local to Massachusetts Route 2 and I-495) to add
it to the few Gateway Solo parts I have on hand... Ben

Thanks Ben...
(Think I ran across your name in several places I have been looking.)
I know I saw the site for removing the keyboard somewhere - can't find it
now but may have saved it (somewhere!?!) in my favorites! <G>
I'm just checking for ideas on where to start right now - before I even
attempt to take it apart. However, if I decide not to fool with it - or do
and don't break anything <G>, I was planning on giving it back to the
original owner and
suggesting to sell it on e-bay or something. I will save this post however,
as another suggestion... (yes - I am in Mi but she is in IA)
