|
|
Hello,
I'm building a new system, which means getting a new DVD R/RW drive.
I'm not current on the good and bad drives so I could use some pointers.
I noticed an internal LG unit w/lightscribe at Best Buy for ~$50.00,
but not sure if it was EIDE or SATA, any comments?
Since the mainboard, ASUS P5-B Deluxe, I'm looking at has only one IDE
port (two drives) I was thinking of going with a SATA DVD drive? Any
suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.
TIA,
Steven |

Very few SATA DVD drives in the marketplace. Plextor has the PX-755SA
and I am running pairs of them with the ASUS P5WD2-E Premiums. The more
conventional approach is to use SATA hard drives and IDE DVD drives. |

At Plextor's suggestion, I run a SATA PX-712A as a complement to my EIDE
760A. The refurb 712A was quite inexpensive and is performing
beautifully; I'm thinking of getting another as a spare. (I have no need
for high-speed recording and one dual-layer writer is ample.)
I had some problems booting XP from SATA on my system so chose to boot
from EIDE and use the SATA HDs in RAID 1 as a data disc. Other systems
will use different configurations, of course, but overall I find little
difference other than the connector employed between SATA and EIDE -
certainly not enough to be worth the SATA premium I've seen quoted.
