|
|
Hi,
I have a Certance LTO3 tape streamer which I upgraded with the last
firmware image from quantum web-site (the new owner of certance). Sadly,
I forgot a tape inside the streamer during firmware update. I think
since then, the tape streamer mechanics makes a mute creak or groan
sound when reaching tape end or changing the spin direction of the tape.
But the tape system still works fine. No errors while backup or restore
sessions. My second LTO3 tape streamer is a HP StorageWorks 960 which
doesn't make any creak sounds (but its a newer revision than certance).
Any ideas if my tape mechanics is broken? How can I recalibrate it so
that the creak sound vanishes? Many thanks for any help!

My IBM LTO-1 drive makes very scary noise when it powers up, but the
rattling sounds appear to be standard part of the head/motor alignment
routine. Since your Certance drive is from an entirely different vendor then
your HP drive you can't compare the two. If your drive doesn't complaint
then there's nothing wrong necessarily. If something's wrong the drive will
post an error.

Maybe the new firmware use another algorithm for head-positioning and
therefore the sound changes after the upgrade.

Hi Mike, Rob,
I thought the same. So, I did a downgrade to the old firmware version.
The sound still exists. But I really get no hardware errors. Everything
is in "green condition". But thanks for the help. It makes me sleep
better now :-)

BTW: What means the "PARK / UNPARK" command in xTalk management console?
Is it to fix the drive arm in park position - maybe for physical
transportation of the whole drive? |
