Hi welcome to HTFC, try to help you if I can.
You say the monitor checks out fine, by this I presume that you tried the monitor on another computer which is the first thing to do, this would then prove the monitor guilty or not.
If the monitor is ok, then I would try removing the graphic card and re-inserting it, many a strange fault has been cleared by doing this so this is well worth a try.
It's a toss of the coin session next as we do need to eliminate things, heads its the graphic card and tails it's the power supply... trying them in another unit or trying known good ones in the Gateway will again prove them guilty or not, at least it'll save un wanted expense by doing this.
When it comes to the graphic card we are not interested in installing the drivers we just wanna' know if it clears the fault.
About the best I can do for you, there may well be a even more simpler solution which I am not aware off.
If it's my 'shout' I'll go for heads the graphic card - could always be wrong mind..!

Davey........
I actually haven't checked the monitor on another pc...just went thru its settings on the screen, etc to try and adjust it. The more and more I read yesterday..I Think as you mentioned, the graphics card is the way to go.I'll check that out and post back
Thanks!

If the graphics or text adjustment settings detail on the monitor is ok (on screen graphics) then it's more than likely not the monitor but if the graphic or text settings details are the same... all lines then I would suspect the monitor, ie sync or line drive fault.
The reason I say this is because the graphic details are generated within the monitor... ie brightness up down, contrast up down etc etc. This is providing there is on-screen display adjustment... some older monitor's don't cater for on screen settings.
Trying the monitor elsewhere or trying another monitor should really be the first thing to do..
