|
|
I would like to be able to view a webcam, which is connected to one
computer (A) on my home network, on another computer (B) on my home
network. This is a basic webcam setup, with a USB connection, using
the AMCap software. I know there are plenty of "nannycam" software
packages and remote Internet programs, but I just want to make the
connection across my home network in real time, without involving the
outside world. I also don't really want to use any "remote desktop"
software, because I don't want the webcam window to open on the local
computer. I am running Windows XP SP2 on both machines.
Currently, I can open the AMCap program on the remote computer (B),
either directly from the shared folder on the local computer (A) where
it is installed, or as a mapped drive on the remote computer. However,
on the remote computer (B), the program only looks for video input
which is installed on the remote computer (B). It does not recognize
the webcam which is installed on the local computer (A). I already
checked the Control Panel on the local computer, and apparently there
is no such thing as "Sharing" for Scanners/Cameras.
So I guess my question is... How can I get AMCap running on Computer B
to recognize the webcam installed on Computer A? Or, is there another
solution to this project? |

A simple solution is to use a web cam program, or use netmeeting
between the two computers. Web cams are usually only viewable
from outside your lan if you intentionally make them viewable. |

Perhaps I wasn't clear. Yes, I know how to start a chat session with a
person on each end. What I want is one-way video from the local
computer to the remote computer, with the ability to turn on and turn
off the webcam from the remote computer, without any human interaction
at the local computer and without the webcam window opening on the
local computer. |

You could try installing AMCap on computer A and then sharing the folder |
that it is installed in. Then simply open the program from computer B
via Windows Explorer...I used to do this with a game (Chicken Invaders)
that I had installed on my main computer, but ran it from my laptop when
the mood took me :-) When run this way, the game did not open any window
on my main computer.
You would have to enable sharing on the folder where AMCap is installed.
AMCap, like most webcam software, auto detects any video/recording
devices on the computer and doesn't appear to give you the option to
'Add' a video device manually.
I personally do not know of any webcam software that will allow you to
use a webcam that is connected to another computer, whether it be via
USB or some other connection.
As you have found out, there is no 'sharing' of cameras or scanners
available. |

Ummmm.....ignore all that...I have just read your post again...seems you |
have already done what I suggested....(insert suitably embarrassed

Perhaps you weren't clear in that you are wanting to run a
hidden cam on the computer to spy on somebody without their
knowledge. This is a fairly typical request. It can be done. |
