If one were to put a Soundblaster X-FI card inside his comp, plus buy a
set of $150-$200 speakers, would the music sounds from his comp equal an
off the shelf stereo unit? Mind you, I said stereo, not hi-fi.

The main problem I'm having is all that static type noise I get on the
CD copies I make. Where does that come from? It renders the copies near
useless. There is also a good amount of distortion present, probably
because of my stock soundcard that came with the comp.

I hoped to be able to rip some favorite tracks off of my CDs, but the
quality in the copies I'm getting is terrible.

Cure?

I might add that when I create .wav files from a CD to save on my HD,
there is none of that noise present.

Only one way to find out... try a different CD unit, there should be no noise at all.

I burned some Christian songs onto a CD and when I played it back it sounded
great. So I labeled it "Master" and proceded to make copies to give away.
After making several copies, I decided to listen to one and it was so noisy
I would have been embarassed to have given it out. Then I played a sampling
from each one and found out that some were noisy and some were not. I put
the CDs into 2 stacks (good and noisy) and noticed the "good" ones were
silver TDK brand CDs and the "noisy" ones were Colored Verbatim DataLifePlus
CDs. It seems the cheap Verbatim CDs were OK for data but not so good for
music. I finished recording on the silver TDK CDs and the problem went away.
I threw the cheap Verbatum CDs in the trash. It seems that not all CDs are
created equal. Long story short, try a different make of CD.
P.S. When I refer to the Verbatum CDs as cheap, I mean that I had purchased
the cheapest CDs I could find. I don't do that anymore. Tom
