now I've done it, took a deep breath and opened up both sides of the
case, dismantled it some, cleaned both sides of both glasses: the upper
lid glass, *and* the lower 'base' unit glass too. the lower part was
-very- difficult to figure out how to open, but I did it...
all illustrated and documented online, in 20 nice clear 800 x 600 images
http://machines.pandela.net/epson_perfection_4990_photo_scanner_dismantling/
by the way, I'm still looking for epson 4990 parts, used, broken, or
maybe even new. I need
= the 35mm filmstrips holder (reportedly epson part number 631204), and
= the 35mm 'mounted slides' holder (reportedly epson number 81105), and
= the white vinyl over foam thing that goes inside the upper lid, aka
"reflective document mat", part number unknown.
these things would be nice to procure my friends. give me a holler, or
shoot me an e-mail,
many thanks :-)

Dave try one to these places. They are in the business of supplying parts
for some Epson printers and maybe scanners.
