I hope someone can clarify this for me. I was able to download and
install Solaris 10 on my Ultra 60 workstation free of charge. However,
even after repeated attempts, I was not able to get the Registration
Wizard / Patch manager to work (hangs every time with threads stuck and
using 100% of CPU).

No problem, I'll just download the patch cluster manually, right? Wrong.
Unless I'm misunderstanding something, there is no free-as-in-beer
download access to the patch clusters for Solaris 10 - Catch 22.

Can someone familiar with the morass of entitlements, programs and
support status variants please tell me:

(a) Is there actually any way to obtain patches for Solaris 10 by
download in the absence of a paid agreement?

(b) If so, how does one accomplish this feat?

You just need to register (free) with Sunsolve (sunsolve.sun.com).
I just tested and I can download the Solaris 10 Recommended Patch
cluster from the website with my free account (I don't have a
support contract). I've used the Sun update manager and
Martin Paul's PCA script although sometimes you have to retry
them a few times.
