Hello to all:
I have developed a problem with my gateway laptop.
I use a usb optical mouse from logitech as oppossed to the touchpad.
It has worked flawlessly for over a year.
About two weeks ago a problem developed.
Whenever I closed the computer cover(while still on), it would be
working on return to windows, but lately it doesnt seem to recognize the
mouse, unless after its return to windows, i unplus the usb cable for a
second and reinsert.
Now, after a complete turnoff, and a power turn on, it always works.
I went to my original cd that came with mouse and reinstalled drivers and
software.
No change. This problem happens about 80 percent of the time, which
is driving me crazy, and I know the cable will weaken after a while, with
unplugging and plugging.
Any suggestions.??

Much thanks to all.

Jerry,

I can only make the generic solution of doing the various cleanups of the
garbage that accumulates inside a Windows computer. Windows itself does not
know much about garbage collection, and because the Windows registry only grows
and grows and grows unless cultivated and trimmed, the registry gets messed up.

So... Download a copy of ccleaner (an abbreviation for Crap Cleaner, what else?)
and use it to clean up and remove useless registry entries. It can also do a
very slick job of cleaning out useless files left behind by all kinds of
programs, but be more careful here. It does far more than Windows own disk
cleanup and sometimes removes useful cookies and other helpful bits of data.

It is a sad fact that Microsoft has laid down the rules for programs to use the
registry as much as possible, even to store some sort of temporary and
transitory data. And most programs slavishly follow Microsoft's rules, leading
to a scr**ed up registry instead of various and sundry program-specific .ini and
other data files as in the old days... Ben Myers
