I was under the impression that for pcs with 64 bit cpus, you needed 64 bit
version of Vista or XP. Then, I saw that Gateway is selling new pcs with
the Pentium D processor, which I thought was a 64 bit processor bundled with
32 bit Vista.
So, can anyone tell me, when you need to install the 64 bit versions of
these operating systems?

I am not being glib in stating that you install a 64-bit operating system with
it meets your needs entirely. As with any new operating system, look VERY
carefully at all the devices supported by 64-bit Vista, including printers,
scanners, and any external devices, not to mention whatever devices are inside
the computer itself. Then make sure that all your favorite software
applications will run, whether as new native 64-bit or as 32-bit running under
the 64-bit operating system. Finally, after you have a complete list of what
is and what is not supported, what does and does not run, make a list of all the
new hardware and software you have to buy for the 64-bit operating system to do
what you really need to do.
Windows went through the same sort of transition from 16-bit Windows 3.1 to
32-bit Windows 95. The costs to upgrade or replace hardware and software were
significant.
So look before you leap... Ben Myers

At this time, most vendors are recommending 32-bit Vista. In fact with
all AMD Turion 64x2 and Intel Core 2 Duo based Gateways (both 64-bit
cpus) come with 32-bit Vista OEM. Customers who purchased between 2006-
Feb that qualify for an upgrade will only receive the 32-bit OEM
version of Vista.
The latest PC World published bench test results and 64-bit Vista is
doesn't show any benefit right now, in fact unless you have enough RAM
it can slow things down. The exception is if you have a scenario where
you're running proprietary software that has been developed to take
advantage of 64-bit and the hardware has more than 2-Gig of RAM. Also,
if you're a software developer and you want the capability to develop
64-bit hardware.
64-bit Vista does have some real potential advantages, but no one has
published a 64-bit must have app yet, we'll need a few of those to
surface before it takes off, then we'll all transition over to 64-bit
Vista. The biggest disadvantage of 64-bit Vista now is finding 64-bit
drivers for all your hardware, if you can hunt down drivers for
everything and you have the 64-bit version of Vista and you have a few
Gig of memory or more, it's worth while... .
