|
|
Ive got a Gateway Select 1000 pc I bought new in April of '01. It has an Amd
Athlon 1ghz processor, 384 mb ran, and a 16 mb Nvidia TNT-2 Vanta video
processor. Unfortunately, this pc came with Windows Milennium edition...
Now, I need to buy turbo tax, and they are not making any more editions for
Windows '98 or ME since MS ceased supporting them. When I asked Gateway if
I could upgrade my pc with XP, they told me it wouldnt work..When I pressed
them on it, they said it was because they didnt have sound, video, and other
drivers for it that work with the components on my machine!
Just because 'They ' dont have drivers.. does that mean drivers dont exist?
Is it really impossible to get XP to run on my pc?

This machine is running long in the tooth too - WIN98 - and I faced
the same problem with Turbotax and put it on wife's machine that has
XP. I actually bought XP a while back but decided not to load it with
all the hoops I would have to jump through. I also have a Dell
running XP - it belongs to a business client - so I have not been
rushed to upgrade but my solution is to retire this old warhorse once
Vista settles in.

Well - the graphics card should work. If you go to Nvidia site and
check
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
It looks like not supported with the latest 93.71 drivers, but says
the release 70 drivers will work and provides a link to get them
http://www.nvidia.com/object/93.71_winxp_32_supported.html
XP came out in 2001, so I would guess that with a bit of digging
around you should be OK.
But it is a vintage machine - and unless you are really strapped for
cash - you may find the cheapest "system unit only" upgrade will fly
in comparison and may be a better idea.

The new PCs are being sold with 64 bit ecus, ie, all those with Pentium D
chips, ie, both Core 2-Duo and Dual Core machines are all 64 bit.. As are
those sold with AMD 64, whether single or dual.
Does the 32 vs 64 bit-ed-ness of the version of Vista or XP that you install
relate directly to this fact?

includes
drivers, too. 64-bit would be even more bloated bloatware... Ben Myers

AFAIK, Vista has been released to the public in 32-bit only.
I'm not sure if Works 2001 will run with Vista. It would run for sure
with XP.

Ben - 64 bit is released. If you look here at the ultimate -
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=33&catid=20
in the retail you get the 32bit and 64bit versions in the one pack.
