Hi, can anyone please tell me what is the fastest cpu that I can fit to
my motherboard?

The M/B is an Asus A7N8X Deluxe, rev 2.0 using bios version 1008.

Its a Socket "A" M/B and I think the fastest cpu for it may either be a
Athlon XP 3200+ or a Sempron 3200+ but I'm not sure which?

Can anyone tell me the main difference between these two.

Thanx

Athlon XP Barton 3200 is the fastest stock speed CPU. It
has 512MB L2 cache to differentiate it from the non-barton,
which has 256K. These are the contemporary CPUs for the
board, I am unfamiliar with what AMD has done with Semprons
for socket A, I vaguely recalled they were increasing the L2
cache on those, but it may depend on which revision of
Sempron you bought.

If you really want max performance out of that board then
get a Mobile Barton, XP2400 to XP2600 and overclock it.
They'll typically o'c to 2.3-2.4GHz without special measures
(you just need a fairly good heatsink), some even higher.

Depending on how much you'd have to spend on this CPU it
might be as cost-effective in the longer term to replace the
motherboard now to support newer CPU architectures.
Whatever present CPU you have (which you didn't mention),
might not have a multiplier lock and could run at the
fastest FSB & memory speed your board supports,
DDR400/200MHz, which could make an upgrade to the fastest
CPU the board supports, not as much of an upgrade as you
were hoping for.

If you have a lot of DDR(1) memory to reuse, one alternative
would be a socket 754 or 939 motherboard and Athlon 64. If
you had any ideas of getting more memory any month soon I'd
suggest you instead move to DDR2 memory based platform now.

The Athlon XP 3200 is the fastest of those two and I think pretty much the

fastest CPU for those type of boards.

Cheers!

Just don't spend $160 dollars on it. You can get an Asrock motherboard and a
socket 939 cpu on new egg pretty cheap these days. And best of all, you can
transfer your ram vid card and hard drives to work on it too

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813157097
has agp and pci express slot for graphics. I built a computer using this
board and its stable with good overclocking features.

Manufactures site says its dual core ready but you may have to flash the
bios first.
