Hi all,

I've just fitted two larger disks in my Sun Ultra 2. They're Fujitsu
MAN3367MC 36 GB disks. They work fine (I'm using the machine to make
this post), but every hour or two I get a weird SCSI error. It happens
on both disks, so I doubt it's a fault with the disks, although it may
be some kind of incompatibility. Here's the error message:

Feb 3 12:17:49 einstein scsi: [ID 107833 kern.warning] WARNING: /
sbus@1f,0/SUNW,fas@e,8800000/sd@1,0 (sd0):
Feb 3 12:17:49 einstein Error for Command: read Error Level:
Retryable
Feb 3 12:17:49 einstein scsi: [ID 107833 kern.notice] Requested

Feb 3 12:17:49 einstein scsi: [ID 107833 kern.notice] Vendor:
FUJITSU Serial Number: UFA3P19021AH
Feb 3 12:17:49 einstein scsi: [ID 107833 kern.notice] Sense Key:
Unit Attention
Feb 3 12:17:49 einstein scsi: [ID 107833 kern.notice] ASC: 0x29
(scsi bus reset occurred), ASCQ: 0x2, FRU: 0x0

Any idea what the cause might be and how serious it is? Suggestions
would be appreciated...

Best wishes,

If you're not using vxvm, svm or some other volume management software,
I'd say you have a block that's getting ready to go south. You can add
it to a blacklist that the format command keeps. I don't remember the
exact menu options, but as I recall it's pretty easy to find.

Your best bet is to back up your data just in case the entire drive's
ready to die.

Good luck,

BV

I'd guess that the disk is on its way out. It might be just one block
is bad, but, well, don't trust it :-).

I'd say you might be right, except that this is happening with two
identical drives. I bought the drives last week with a 3 month
warranty. It seems a bit unlikely that two drives would fail at once,
especially when both were throughly tested recently.

Best wishes,

Are the block numbers identical? I'd run a format / verify on them
both to see if they are happy. If they were second hand then it's not
that unlikely they are sickly (even from reputable people: it would
make the drives a bunch more expensive to do serious testing since it
takes many hours per drive (albeit you can do several at once)).

No, the block numbers are different every time. They seem to be
random.

The company I bought the disks from said they were throughly tested
and guaranteed free from grown defects. I also ran a "format >
analyze" on the disks for several hours to test them before did a
fresh install of the OS. There still aren't any grown defects. No
problems apart from these error messages every few hours.

Best wishes,

Chris

I'd wonder about the SCSI cabling etc? It might be worth trying a
known-OK drive and seeing if you get the same set of errors.
