Lets say I was building some sort of electronic device and I wanted to
power it with an old PC power supply. What would I have to do to
'emulate' the PC power button to turn the thing on?

put a paper clip [ short out ] 14 and 15 on the power supply main
power connector. 14 is PS-on and 15 is common.

On an AT PSU just install a switch if it's not there already. On an ATX

you'd need a switch between ground and pin 14 IIRC.

Bear in mind a lot of ATX PSUs like to drive a suitable load, just turning
them on and leaving them running with no load can cause them to fail.....
