I have just installed a pci modem on a windows 2000 pc for dial up access
to my ISP and have one annoying problem. If my computer is turned off, an
incoming phone call or an outgoing phone call will automatically turn on the
computer ! The modem works fine in all other respects.
Can anybody suggest how to overcome this annoyance ?
Hopefully, I have configured the set up incorrectly.

I have same problem with a Win 98 PC. It is a "feature" of the PC itself |
called "Wake on Ring". The PC & modem detect ringing on the line, and
the PC proceeds to boot up. When I looked into it some time ago, I was
told that the BIOS of my PC (Dell XPS R400 PII ) needed to be modified
to allow the disabling of this "feature". To date Dell has not made a
modified version available.
I have an external modem so there were 3 workarounds, 1 was to delete
pin 25 (the RING signal wire)in the cable, 2 was to power off modem when
not in use, 3 is to disconnect line cord. I do #2, you may want to do #3
as you have internal modem, if your BIOS does not have an enable/disable
option.
You might also check modem docs to see if by chance your model has a
setting to disable RING output. Don't be confused by S setting S0. In
WOR, the line only needs to ring, the modem does not have to answer.

Most system bios have option to turn on/off "wake on" settings. |
You could also try turning off auto answer in the modem configuration.

If you can't find a "soft" solution, then, if your modem has a 1uF
250V ringer capacitor, desolder it. This will prevent your modem from
detecting the ring signal. However, if you need to receive faxes, then
this will not be an appropriate solution.

The BIOS fix worked. Thanks to KenW and Reed for this suggestion.
