Hello All,

I recently acquired a box from a friend. It got infected by the MSBlaster
virus, so he gave it to me a bought a new one :-)

I tried to blow away the old OS, reformat the drive and do a clean install
of Windows XP Professional. While installing, I received an error message
(that I didn't write down) about being unable to write a file (NTLoader I
think) or an error caused by this file. I was given the option to skip the
error and continue w/ the install so I did. The process progressed (if I
remember right) but hung on a screen saying that Windows XP was being loaded
(the screen just before login).

Because the boot was dead, I restarted the computer. This time, however,
and every time since the screen just goes black. The fan starts so it seems
to be getting power but the monitor doesn't receive a signal; the monitor's
LED is orange rather than green and it says "no signal present" if I unplug
and plug in the monitor cable. I switched video cards, but that didn't
help.

At this point I don't know what else to try. Can anyone suggest other
components that might be the source of the problem and how I might check
them?

Here is a little more info about the system:

Motherboard: SIS 5595
BIOS: AMI FS48820 (as best as I can tell)
OS: Windows XP Professional

TIA.

Hey Jan,

Come to think of it, I ran the setup from w/ in the old, infected install.
It copied the files to the C drive, rebooted and ran the Windows XP
installer. When I booted up into the GUI-mode of the install (or just after
I forget), I was asked to select the OS I wanted to run. To my surprise, I
now had a duel boot box. (I have learned a lot about deployments since
then; too late for this machine however :-)

I talked to my supervisor at school (I am on the Windows sys admin training
team) today; he recommended taking everything out of the box -- drives,
cards, everything but a stick of memory and the video card. Then to add
components back one at a time and use the beeps to diagnose the problem. I
did this and the same thing happens: no signal to the display, no beeps,
just a fan.

Any other ideas?

Almost sounds as if the virus is still present.
(NTLoader I think)

Did you in fact delete the partition?

I don't think that is it. I put in a boot floppy and fired it up. Still
nothing. That should have worked even if the C drive still has Blaster on
it.

On my motherboard, if I stick duff RAM in, this is what I get as well.
It also happens if I incorrectly set something in the BIOS (Why o why
cant it at least say memory error!) anyways, try clearing CMOS by either
using the clr CMOS jumper if your BIOS has it or removing the battery
and waiting 20 minutes

Another sign of bad RAM is XP wont install properly from CD-ROM, it will
fail at some point with "whatever.dll cannot be copied" and this is one
of your symptoms too, so I would check with new RAM (It is possible you
got the RAM timings wrong in the BIOS too!)

I dont think msblaster.exe is causing these symptoms.

Good luck
