I have a laptop with a nvidia graphics card which presents a VGA port
for an external monitor. I have an LCD television which has a DVI input
AND does support analogue VGA type signals. I have an adapter which
connects VGA and DVI and a DVI cable. When I connect the TV to my
laptop it seems to be unable to detect the presence of the external
monitor (tv) and refuses to allow me to extend my desktop onto the
television. I believe this may be because the graphics card isnt
detecting the monitor and therefore wont allow me to use the external
display feature. Does anyone know of a way to force the external
display of my graphics card to ON. I am using windows XP.

Probably, what you have is a DVI-to-VGA adapter. It enables you to connect a
DVI output to a VGA input, not the other way around. It is rare for an LCD
device to accept VGA signals via its DVI input. So, check that out again and
you need a VGA-to-DVI converter.

Also, there is no such graphic card as the nVidia x700. There's the ATI
x700, though.
