I got on a web site (non ***) and it had adverts saying "Girls from
{where I live} want to meet you!" And then it had pics of girls from
{where I live}.

My question is how does a web site know where I am from? When I say
"Where I am from" I mean my city. Wait.....don't be so quick to
answer. My ISP is in a different COUNTY and different CITY then
mine. So how can a web site know where I am?

Sorry if this is a little off topic, its just you guys are gurus and
have an extreme knowledge base.

Thanks

It references IP address ranges vs databases, the results
are only as accurate as the database and granularity of the
IP ranges. IOW, the more specific it tries to be estimating
where you are, the more likely it's off some, pointing to
last valid data of the ISP.

Here's something to look at,
http://www.ip2location.com/free.asp
or there are plenty more examples via Google search.

Actually, I think it's probably being a little more sneaky than that. I had
a similar issue, but instead of the city name coming up, my surname
appeared. It freaked me out to start with. It's not the most common surname
going, so I can't see coincidence being the cause. I can only assume that it
was looking at a common cookie on the machine, from some other site!

It's often quite difficult to work out where someone is using their IP
address. For instance, my ISP (Zen), is in Rochdale, UK. I'm about 200 miles
away from that, in Essex.

I went there just for kicks. I've had those 'meet singles' links appear
with the name of my very small town listed.

I live in Southern Colorado. That site told me I was in New York City. It
got the companies name right though. LOL

I also noticed those "meet singles in your town" ads that
got my city right. I also noticed those websites, such as
Nextag.com, etc., that ask your city in order to calculate the
sales tax. I started telling Nextag and the others that I lived
in Santa Maria, California - about 250 miles away. Lo and
behold, within 2 weeks, I was being invited to "meet singles
in Santa Maria". No matter what the personal information is,
someone somewhere is collecting and selling it. In this case,
it was the city corresponding to my IP address according to
my STATED shipping address. Now, I always use other
cities in the same state to figure sales tax and approximate
shipping cost.
