Hi,

My old modem failed, so I picked up another from a 2nd hand shop. It works
fine for fax. But now I want to enable the voice functionality on the modem
and am not sure how. I notice there is a TADI 4-pin connector on the modem
card itself, I tried to connect it to my sound card but it didn't fit, where
am I suppose to connect it to? I'm sure it's a voice modem because it has
Mic and Speaker jack on the modem, but when I tried to hook them up to my
mic and speaker, my computer reboots immediately. The next thing is driver,
do I need a particular driver to enable the function or the built-in XP
driver should be sufficient?

Please help.

Thanks.

This is a can of worms because modems do vary in their pin configurations
and jacks used for the speakerphone connection cable. What sort of
secondhand modem did you get (not just the chipset used but the actual make
and model)? If you're not sure of the make and model, do you have an FCCID
no or part no printed on it?

I suggest you find the specific file to suit your modem and the version of
Windows you're using. Windows XP native "drivers" (they're actually called
inf files for most older onboard controller modems) are notoriously
unreliable at getting the finer details to work properly with modem
hardware. My Pace 56 Solo modem has a native Win XP driver which clearly has
some mistakes and as a result Caller ID isn't displayed on PhoneTools (the
App I use it with). I've created a fixed inf which does work fully with the
modem and I even drew Microsoft's attention to the problem with the original
inf but they didn't fix it in Win2k3 or XP SP2 - so much for the value of a
digital signature!

If you're stuck IDing your modem, let us know what details are on it
(assuming you haven't already resolved this).
