Maybe a silly question, but...
I am scanning in a number of files at 600dpi.
If I later decide that 300dpi is adequate (600dpi takes up such massive
amounts of storage for these scans), is there a way to batch reduce the
dpi of the files from 600 to 300?
These are scanned in using Silverfast and saved as TIFFs.
Thank you.

IrfanView will do this well, and it is free.

I forgot to also ask-
Is the resulting file (reduced from 600 to 300 using IrfanView) the
exact same (same detail, etc) as if I had originally scanned the image
in at 300dpi?
Thank you!

Well that would likely depend on the scanner. But IrfanView does a
very good
job at down sampling an image so I would think it would be at least as
good as if
you scanned at 300 dpi (or ppi as people now like to use).

But why not give it a try, it is free and pretty easy to use. You can
scan at 600 and 300 and then
dowm sample the 600 scan to 50% and see how it compares to the 300 ppi
scan.

BTW you use the batch mode for resizing. You will want to use the
advanced options and set the
size to 50% of the original and also set the dpi to 300.

Depends on how you reduce the DPI.

If you just change the reported dpi in irfanview the data does not change
other than the reported dpi. (The image will then print at twice the size it
did before changing from 600 dpi).

If you resize the image to reflect the effect of scanning at 300 dpi, you
will reduce the file size and the pixel dimensions of the files, but you
will not change much of the original appearance of the original scan at 600
dpi.
