Maybe you guys can help me I'm completely clueless when it comes to this. I just need a few questions answered and I'll be all set.
1: Is the E4000 able to hold a 200 GB harddrive ?
2: Where and how do I connect a media Cable up to the system ?
3: and If #1 Is yes then how do I connect the hard drive because I always get an error saying the Harddrive is not found. It will have to be a slave drive but does it matter where I put the little jumper drive thingy ? (I mean the thign thjat determines whether it's Master or Slave it's on cable select should I change that ?) It will have to be slave no matter what.
I don't lieksayign questions and then not figuring it out for myself but I'm so flusterred all the time hard to find out. |

Hey! I'm no expert, so don't let me get in the way of somebody who REALLY
knows, like Ben M. - but here goes;
1) Properly configured the machine should boot up and show you an
additional drive letter on which you can do "Properties" and see how much of
the drive has been recognized. More on the jumper setting later.
2) When you say "media Cable," do you mean the TV? For that you will need to
install a video (graphics accelerator) card with an RF and/or an 'S' input.
The e4000 has integrated video, which of course has no TV.
3) To connect an additional HDD as a slave you put the end of the ribbon
cable into the existing drive and connect the new drive in the second
position of the same cable. The jumpers go on the left for the original
(master) drive and in the middle for the new (slave) drive. If you use the
"Cable" position (right) then both drives must be configured the same.
At the end of all this I hope you don't find the horse power of the old
E4000 insufficient to run powerful graphics and a mega HDD. Look out for an
inadequate power supply for the upgrades and you'd probably need to add
memory to do meaningful gaming. This machine was intended for business
purposes, not heavy graphics. See

Which E4000 model? There are E-4100, E-4300, etc.
Which motherboard, or which BIOS (it describes the motherboard)?
I'm assuming that you have an older parallel ATA (aka EIDE) drive there.
To jumper the drive correctly, you need to figure out which type of cable the
system has. It is probably a Cable Select cable. If the original hard drive
is jumpered on the Cable Select position, jumper the 200GB drive the same. If
the original is jumpered as Master, set the 200GB jumper to the Slave position.
Make sure that the drive has a power connector plugged into it, which you
probably have already done.
Before going further though, install Windows XP Service Pack 2, if you have not
done so already. SP2 overcomes Windows limitations on the sizes of drive
partitions, but the motherboard BIOS may also have a built-in limitation on
drive capacity. See if Gateway has a BIOS update for your specific
motherboard.
If the BIOS does not recognize the drive after you've jumpered it as above, it
is time to examine the drive cable to see which type it is. Hold it up to the
light and look for a small opening in the cable, where one of the cable strands
has been cut. If you see light thru a small hole, you have a cable select type
cable, which is most likely. Otherwise you have a master-slave drive cable.
That's about all I can suggest... Ben Myers
