Curious if you guys collect Suns, and if so what are the most coveted
machines?

I wouldn't turn down one of the original machines.

For Paul E Coad: your email bounced, so I'll paste my response here:

WOW! That's a lot of machines Paul! (he has 20-30 machines!)

But yeah, I hear ya, they were rock solid! I don't have that many,
partly because I got to sun machines a bit later than most folks (in
university in the late 90's), but I've got a couple oldies. But
unfortunately I'll have to sell them coz my wife is hassling me about
space and all... Have hacked them with lithium battery holders and
cared for them and all so it'll hurt a bit, but what can I do? That's
why I was asking to see if people around here collect them and might be
interested

I don't understand my wife, we only have 3 PCs, 2 suns, 2 SGIs, 2
macintoshes and one Apple //c smile Just the minimal setup for a 4 persons
family, what d'you think ? :)

The SPARC Classic is a lovely little machine. I had one but I gave it
to the computer museum at Bletchley Park because I was short of room. I
just keep an Ultra 2 for working on.

Best wishes,

Any Motorola based machine is probably interesting. I think anything
after that must still be too common. I bet there are loads of Sun 3s
around, but Sun 2s & before must be fairly rare by now. The first Sun
in Scotland (a 2/120?) used to live at Sun's Linlithgow site having
been donated to them by my wife, but I suspect is now gone, sadly. The
last media we knew of for it was lost in a fire a while ago.

The Sun 386i, aka Road Runner, comes to mind.

I have a 386i/150 XP, chipped to 25 MHz so it presents itself as a
386i/250 ;-), somewhere in the garage, but haven't booted it up in
many years.

It was short lived, and only ran SunOS 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 before being
EOL:ed.

Have a couply of 3/50's, a 3/150 vme bus tower, a 3/60, which was my
first sun machine and unix box of any type back in '93 + a whole load of
assorted sparc systems dating back as far as SS1+. To keep the peace,
most of this is not at home, but is in a small unit rented from a local
farmer, along with a whole load of other dec etc kit

This closely characterises my own collection (3/60s, maybe a 3/50, a
3/160, and a bunch of antique DEC gear :)

that should really
have been dumped years ago.

Ah, I assume you mean, "flogged on ebay". DEC is highly sought after by
collectors (like me:).

Are you looking for anything in particular ?. Still have a fair stock of
qbus and unibus boards that will probably never be used here + stuff
like old microvax 2000's, mips decstations etc. Sold an old Vax 11/725
unibus deskside on Ebay a few months ago. Originally had vms, but
installed 4.3 bsd around 1993 or so from 9 track tape. The kernel took
over 3 days to rebuild after the install, with me praying for no power
cuts meantime.:-). About 0.3 vax mips, 4 megs memory on 4 x 1 meg cards,
emulex smd controller for a fuji 330 meg drive, delua network card,
telnet and ftp working fine and quite usable for terminal sessions once
the system was booted.

Problem with having a store away from the house is that there is never
really any incentive to dump anything. Out of sight, out of mind etc and
there always seems to be space to add yet more junk :-)...

I had to toss out two Ultra30's and two Ultra 10's (ran out of stacking
space).
Needed the space for 3 Ultra60's, 1 Ultra 10, an Ultra2, 3 Blade 2000's and
a Blade 1000 with
just one processor.
I live near a place that occasionally sells surplused Sun boxes cheap, and I
cannot resist the smaller ones.
I could have picked up 2 E3000's and a couple E4500's for 5USD each but
needed a fork truck and
a pickup truck to haul them all. Definately big iron. I had to pass on that
deal.
