I got a WD external 320g HD and wonder which is faster, USB or firewire for
data transfer?

The claim in a few places, is Firewire is best. USB could have
more overhead, because for USB2, at least part of the protocol
is polled. (The host queries devices at regular intervals.)

But the chipset can also make a difference. Some USB to disk
interfaces are inferior to others.
If you have both interfaces on the external drive, why not test
both of them ? HDtach from Simplisoft might be able to help.

A "tilted line" in HDTach, means you are media rate limited.
A "flat line" in HDTach, means the cable is the limiting factor.
