I have an Epson All-In-One RX500 with an outstanding problem. I cannot scan
8 1/2 by 11 documents and capture the entire document. I have checked the
manual
to no avail. I'm using Epson's Smart Panel as an interface. That program lets
you
reduce or enlarge an image, but does not control the original size of the scan.
The
result is that I am chopping off one edge or another no matter how I position
the
document on the scanner or enlarge or reduce the image. I can see that the
scanning
light is wider than the 8 1/2 width of paper, and it's travel is beyond the 11
inch mark. I don't know if there is some adjustment or setting that can be done
to capture a full 8 1/2 by 11 inch image from this machine. Does anyone have
any
ideas?

Carl,
I believe the scan adjustment you are referring to (Marquee) is used to REDUCE or crop
the scanned area, not increase it. My problem relates to the original scan which is not entirely
capturing the full 8 1/2 by 11 inch document.

The auto detect is not 100% correct, if the document has a lot of white area
in the margins, it may not find the whole 8 1/2 X 11 page.
My Canon sure does not every time. It is a simple task to move the Marquee
to scan the whole page.
It sets the scanning area, if the area is too small you can increase the
Marquee of include all of the document. After doing a preview then check the
Marquee and stretch it to cover the whole 8 1/2 X 11 document.
Scanners may not scan the extreme edge of the Glass platen. Most miss about
1-2 mm of the edge. You can solve that by positioning the paper away from
the edge about 1/8 inch.
Read in the manual starting at Page 63 of the PDF file. Start reading at
Scanning from a Program. And use the Professional Mode.
Quit guessing and try it. You may think that is the way it works, but you
won't know for sure until you try and see if you can increase the scanning
area that way.

Epson's smart panel does offer A4 as on option, as well as LTR, A5, and legal.
However, these options do not increase the initial scanned size of the image to
the full coverage I am trying to achieve.
One bright spot is that I have upgraded my printer driver and Twain software to
the
latest levels, and although I haven't checked the effect, I think I am seeing
some
improvement. Epson is not the most communicative company I have dealt with, so
they do not specify the effects of this upgrade. They only mention an
improvement
in the way the ink supply is monitored. I will have to do more trials.

It may be in the Printer paper size selection. (This is an All-in-One) so
printer functions may effect the scanner settings.

Page 37 shows the paper size selection dropdown on the printer properties
button.
Try this paper size selection of A4, and see if that does not allow you to
scan A4 paper 11.7 inches long.

not been
able to extend the scanning area. I read the manual, and as I already
stated, the
marquee can only crop or reduce the maximum size of the scan. This is not
a case
where the scanner is confused by white area. The scan will cut off text
at the edges.
The scanner bed is much larger than 8 1/2 by 11 inches, and the light also
is larger
than that and travels beyond the 11 inch mark. It could be something in
the software
interface Epson uses, Smart Panel. I have tried Professional Mode, and
that didn't
help. There are markings on the flatbead beyond the size I need, but I
don't know
how to activate them. I submitted a query to Epson Technical Service days
ago,
received an acknowledgment of receipt, but so far, no answers.
I wonder if other Epson scanners have the same behavior. Is there some
limitation
of these flatbeds that prohibits capturing a complete scan of an 8 1/2 by
11 inch document?
My scanner does a maximum scan of 7 1/2 inches by 9 3/4 inches.
