I put together an all scsi pc about 5 years ago, with a 9GB u2w hd
attached to an Adaptec 2940U2W controller. Later added an 18GB hd to
the chain with no problem (both hd were 80 pin, attached via an 80 to
68 pin adapter).

Now its been several years, with few or no changes, I'm a little rusty,
I go to replace the 9GB hd with a 73GB hd (160 transfer rate, but I'm
ok with it dropping back to 80 due to the 18GB hd in the same chain).
Everything ok, but I have to setup numerous partitions for a multiboot
setup I had on the 9GB.

I get a bright idea that I can install the 9GB in the chain, and copy
entire partitions! However, when I add it to the chain, switch the
computer on, nothing (slightest of hum, maybe). I unplug it, the
computer fires up normally. Put it back in the chain, dead silence
(not even the case fan spins).

Could it be insufficient power supply? Its got a 230watt supply, but
its an elderly PIII 500Mhz. Can I (did I) do harm by doing this?

One other question (might be related to the first problem). Those
little 80 to 68 pin adapters have jumpers for the scsi id#. Then the
HD has jumpers for the scsi id#. Do both jumpers need to be set or
does the 80 to 68 pin adapter jumper cover me? I thought the 80 pin
setup was to facilitate hot swapping HDs. Did they really expect you
to open your hd case and adjust the jumpers every time you hot swapped
the hd to another bay or another computer?

Thanks for any advice

<GGGG> Dropping it down to 40 because the 2940 is in the chain?

Powersupply overloaded?

It's a 2940U2W, which is 80 MByte/sec

Clueless, as ever. (And a Happy New Year to you too).

Then the HD has jumpers for the scsi id#.

So you have a choice, isn't that nice.

Did they really expect you to open your hd case and adjust the jumpers
every time you hot swapped the hd to another bay or another computer?

And why exactly would you want to do that for?

Yes, could be PSU. Have you tried just the 9 & 73Gb drives? Have you

tried setting startup delay jumper. 3 SCSI drives is a lot of startup
current.
