After I installed fresh windows xp(sp1) copy on my new wd sata hard
drive. My MB is msi k8t800 pro with via chipset. I have installed sata
drivers when i installed xp by pressing "F6". Everything seems to be
working fine until i installed my onboard sound card driver for realtek
97 audio. It starts to make unstable static noise whenever there is
sound playing out and multiple processes running (the hard drive is
working) . I have already updated bios and installed the newest sound
card driver.
My friend told me it seems like an irq problem. Any suggestions?

Unlikely, and you can check if both the sound system and
the hard drive are using the same IRQ in the device manager.

Does it do it with Cool N' Quiet disabled ?
Is this the motherboard model ?

IRQs can do it. PCI Delayed Transaction setting [Enabled] could help
(some BIOS don't list that one, because it is always enabled).
PCI Latency Setting of 32 would be a good value. The manual for the above
board, does not fully document the BIOS, so I cannot give any specifics
for the board.
I'll guess Cool N' Quiet for now, like maybe a
bus disconnect when the sound tries to play. A
fun experiment, might be to run Prime95 and use
its Torture Test, and then play a sound while Prime95
is still running, and see if it makes a difference.
It could also be defective hardware.
And if you run out of things to try, try an alternate
OS like Knoppix or Ubuntu. Linux will use a different kind
of driver to get to the sound hardware, and will help you determine
whether this is a Windows driver issue, or is more hardware
related. If the same crappy sound exists in both Windows and
Linux, then it is likely a hardware problem of some sort.
