Are you sure the new computer does not have a built-in dial modem ??

Most do. Does the unit have a port labeled as "phone", or handset symbol ??

Otherwise, you will need a USB-to-serial adapter, which is more than
just a cable. Or if you have available slots, a serial port card.

Thanks for the reply,no it doesn't have a built-in modem,evently I will get
Roadrunner, but right now I need dial-up,if usb to serial adapter will work
that might be the way to go,depending on the cost.

The new computer will have (very likely) a com port on the

motherboard. Check the MoBo manual, look for a la "COM1".

All you need is a D9 or D25 bracket (connector) with a cable
which plugs into the MoBo.

A few $ at cop. store. Ask for D9 or D25, that is, whatever is
at the end of your modem cable now.

While the O/P seems to be using windoze, those internal or built-in
so-called "modems" are invariably loosemodems of one version or another.
You seem to be posting from a Macintosh, and the manufacturers rarely
bother to supply the non-windoze software needed to emulate the hardware
that they left out to "reduce expenses". I also have much better things
to do with my CPU cycles. We'll ignore the very religious subject of
"internal verses external" modems ;-)

Very suitable solutions.

I would take issue with "very likely". Possible, sure. I would take a look in
BIOS first - if you can't see a serial/com port in there, there won't be a riser
on the MB, or it won't be useable. But this is the best solution by far.

Second best is a PCI serial card from the likes of lindy.

Third is a USB / serial converter cable. (A long way third).

I speak from experience! (The serial to usb have a habit of not working, or
changing their COM number...)

Yeah, you're right; "possibly" rather than "very likely" - I
don't know for sure which one. ;)

Similarly, reading MoBo manual (if one came w/ the box) might
_possibly_ help.
A trip back to the store (if there is one) would be the safest
thing to do for the OP.

BTW, thanks for the heads up -- we didn't about serial to USB
changing the com #s.
