|
|
I have a Pioneer DVR 106D dual format DVD writer, which is about 3 years
old now and it has written about 100 media dvd's and about 10/12 data dvd's.
All the media and most of the data dvd's are the +R format, and I have about
2/3 -R format.
Today I have found that the DVD writer won't or can't read my +R format data
dvd's, yet can read the -R format ones. The dvd's are of different makes,
and 1 is a DataSafe -R whis perfectly readable along with an un named 'Daton
Premium' -R.
I just burnt a, well 2, Verbatim +R data dvd a using Nero, and Nero complained
it could not complete the TOC, and the burn was not successful.
The burn speed was at x2 as the first attempt was done at x4 but that went
wrong as well.
I have updated the firmware for this burner and also installed the latest
aspi files
So is it the media or my burner on the way out.?
Thanks |

Hello Dan,
So you mean I should only use x4 speed dvd's, and not anything or others
above that, like x8 or x16 which I have now.
The dvd writer will only write at x4 maximum anyway. so I am not exactly
sure what you mean.
Thanks

current media, and should only be used to burn true 4x media. Unless
you have some of that media, it's time to replace the burner.
ASPI is doing exactly nothing for you, unless you have Win98.

8x and 16x media is very different from 4x, different dye. A burner must
have firmware support for any specific media, or it will default to a
generic burn strategy, in your case that might be 2x speed. The resulting
burn quality can be very poor, coaster-ville. It's purely a matter of luck
if you get a decent quality burn with 8x or a6x media. Pioneer stopped
releasing firmware for that drive 2 years ago, before any of the current
media was available, so that's why I'm saying to find some 4x media.
Add to that the fact that even with proper firmware support, most 16x media
does not burn well at lower speeds (inadequate laser temp for the dye).
You can replace that old burner for about $35, and happily burn any new
media ate 8x or 12x with excellent results, assuming your PC is fast enough.
