I just bought a Lite-On 16x, dual layer DVD Re-Writer. CDs played fine.
When I put in a rented movie it looked great but it had no sound.

I called Lite-On and was told that the product didn't come with audio
software and that I needed to go on line and BUY IT!!!

I cussed them out and took it back.

Questions...
1. Have you ever heard of this?
2. Could I have used any other free software off the WWW?
3. The included software was Nero 7 Essentials. I forgot that I had
Nero 6. I think 6 worked with another DVD player I used to have. Could
I have used Nero 6?
4. What other burner (with play capabilities) would be good in the
"below $80" range? My shopping choices are...Walmart, Kmart, Meijer,
Office Depot, Office Max, Best Buy, Circuit City.

You do need DVD player software. Windows Media Player 11 should be able to

do it just fine. If you select an audio type that your system doesn't
support you will get no audio. DTS, some Dolby surround and THX may not play
if you do not have hardware support. As far as the DVDRW you bought goes, it
has nothing to do with the sound. Check and see what your sound card or
onboard sound supports.

I just read in the manual for this Memorex Recorder that the encoders
are only demonstration versions and that they will expire. I will then

I don't understand all this, but I think that it tells me to return
this one also.

No, you don't need an "encoder" to play back audio, you only
need the decoder. That's the way some codecs are
distributed, playback is for free but the content developers
who need to encode it, have to pay.

All you need to play back a DVD is a properly working DVD
player software (and of course the drive, which you
obviously have).

I went out today and bought a Memorex DVD Dual Layer Recorder with Nero
6 Software (The one I took back had Nero 7). I put a movie in and it
plays fine. So it did have something to do with the Nero 7 or the
Lite-On Recorder.

It's possible Nero 7 install scr**ed up something on the
system, but if the other drive reads data at all (which it
certainly seemed to), there was no need for another drive or
a need for "other" software.

You need only two things to watch a DVD (besides the
obvious, a computer less than 10 years old or so);

DVD drive
DVD software

Given the first it is only a software issue unless the drive
was somehow defective but that would not seem to be the case
when it can read data. It is always good to be cautious
about the software aspect, don't install new software you
don't need, and if the system stops doing something it
should've been able to do already, remove thereafter added
software... and in the case of media player related software
it's also common to have to reinstall the original software
because the latter software messed up some windows settings
or overwrote files that it didn't *fix* when uninstalled.

you may not have the necessary Codec installed on
the computer try Gspot available from
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/index.htm
It will identify what Codecs are needed by the
file you are trying to play & also the Codecs installed
on your computer.

A DVD reader/writer does not output audio, except perhaps
from normal *audio* CDs. It is reading data - your system
has (should have) the software that determines this data is
an audio format and supports it's playback. There is no
other brand you would choose to overcome this, you need to
determine why your system isn't playing DVD(?) audio tracks.
The DVD playback software may need some settings changed.

The Nero 6 Suite has Nero Showtime........a DVD player. I am not sure

whether it is in Nero 7 or not.

I just downloaded PowerDVD and this Memorex recorder works much much
better than it did with the Nero software. With Nero it was jumpy and
freezed framed every once in a while. I also got various errors.
PowerDVD woks flawlessly so far. So I guess I'll take this $80 burner
back and try the Lite-on for $50 again.

Now I need to try to find a free software package so I can avoid having
to pay for PowerDVD after 30 days.

Why not download some free movies as well?
