|
|
Hello,
I have just got an Xbox 360 and the feature of Xbox Live requires internet connection. My 360 and my computer are located in the same room. My issue doesn't require an Xbox expert, just someone who knows ethernet cables. The problem, I'm not goint to spend a hundred plus dollers for a wireless router and a wireless network adapter when all I need is just a wired router. I was supplied with an ethernet cable with my Xbox, but it was not long enugh to reach my modem and soon to be router. Is there any type of extension I could get for the cable to that it will reach my preferated area? If so, how long is it, where can I find one at, and how much are they? All advise is appriciated. Thank You. Tony. |

That's good - 'cause I don't do Xbox either. Ethernet cables? There
are two variables. One is how the pins are connected to each other,
and the other is how tightly the wires are twisted.
The first concept is called a "cross-over" cable if it's going to
connect two computers _directly_ to each other, and a "straight-through"
or "standard" cable if it is to connect a computer to a hub, switch, or
router. Normally, this is a four pair (eight wires) connector. The
pairs are 1-2 3-6 4-5 and 7-8. Look carefully at the back of the
connector, and compare the wire colo[u]rs of the first three pins
from left or right edge. If the colo[u]rs are the same at each end
(often wh/grn, grn, wh/orn, blu, wh/blu, orn, wh/brn, brn - where grn
is green, orn is orange, blu is blue, and brn is brown, and wh/grn means
white with a green stripe) you have a straight-through cable. If the
green and orange pairs swap position on the two ends of the cable,
that's a cross-over cable.
The second concept - how tightly they are twisted relates to the
speed capability of the cable. You probably want "Cat 5" cable, rather
than older (but slightly cheaper) "Cat 3".

I think you mean a wired connection.

Generally speaking, no. The solution is to buy a longer replacement.
You _might_ find adapters, that allow you to plug in two cables
end-to-end at about US$2-3. The "second" cable you would then need would
be a straight-through type.

It would have helped to know what _country_ you're in - but what-ever.
Cables come in various lengths from 3 feet to 25 feet (0.9 to 7.6 meters)
at nominal prices of US$7 (3 foot) to US$20 (25 foot) at just about any
store that sells computer stuff. Longer cables are probably available
(maximum length of 185 meters or 607 feet). Cables longer than about 100
feet or 30 meters may be special order - as they would normally be
fabricated "on-site". Were you to decide to build them yourself (not
recommended for the home user), the wire is about US$180 for 1000 foot
(328 meter) rolls, the connectors about US$2 each, but the special tool
needed to attach the connector runs around US$150. (Now you know why it's
not recommended.) Larger computer stores should have them.

I was looking for about 30-40 feet of ethernet cable recently and found a great solution at a video store.
They had all of the "old" gaming stuff on clearance, where I found a package with 2 25foot cables and a coupler ( the thing you are looking for to connect two cables end to end ) for $7.50US ( regularly $14.99 ).
It also included a bunch of adhesive cable holders for wall mounting.
Thanks Blockbuster!!
I bought three of them in the store, but if your interested in the same package the manufacturer lists a website...although I havent checked it to see if you can actually buy these there. http://www.nyko.com
