Hi,
I am presently ordering up pieces for a new system that will run from a wd
150 gb raptor sata drive.
No special needs--a little aimed towards gaming but should be a sata drive I
guess.
I tend to like slot loaders. Any ideas guidance? tia.
Stuart.

The only slot loading drive I ever had was a Sony and would happily swallow
a disk even if it was already chewing on one. It was getting old at that point.

I don't know why it's taking the optical drive manufacturers so long to adopt
SATA. I know that Samsung also makes a SATA drive, but it's not slot load.

It's cheaper than the Plextor, but I don't own one and I can't vouch for it.

Because they're little reason to make one yet? Practically
all systems have PATA still, and there is no performance
advantage to SATA on optical drives, so it'd essentially
cost more without gain, and use up an SATA channel you
could've otherwise used for an SATA HDD.

Have fun explaining why SATA hard drives showed up
much earlier when the same considerations apply to those.

Gets sillier by the minute. Presumably you cant even see that.

Hi,

Just to say I went with a plextor 760sa. which is sata but not slot loading.
It will be interesting to see how it performs.
Thanks all and have a good New year smile
Stuart.

Cost more-- you mean like adding a third party JMICRON
or VIA controller to the motherboard to support PATA
since the chipset makers seem to have dropped it like a hot
potato? I don't like routing the fat ribbons, and, lately, I have
seen the connectors in some of the most ridiculous places.
How many SATA headers can you fit in place of a PATA
header? I imagine it might simplify trace routing, as well.

Been there, done that. When SATA HDD showed up I DID
mention there wasn't any reason use one, except one-off
models like a Raptor, or if # of controllers on the board
made it more accomodating (as with this most recent reply).

Show me 2 boards without PATA support and I'll show you 5
with. Chipset makers don't seem to have dropped it.

Does it matter what you like? I'm not trying to be
obnoxious or personal by that, I mean, like it or not it is
easy, not a problem. To think otherwise would be ignoring
the past millions of systems sold for over a decade.

Imagine anything you like, the bottom line is it's not hard,
not a problem at all. All motherboards easily demonstrate
whatever issues there were routing PATA, were solved a
decade ago.

Irrelevant to why its taken much longer for SATA
optical drives to show up than SATA hard disk drives.

Hint: it aint gotta damned thing to do with that crap in your first para at the top.
