Hello to all. I havent been on the n.g. for a while, so hello to all
who remember me.
I got as a gift a little over a year ago, a gateway laptop as a gift,
purchased at a retail chain.
After an initial problem, of the lamp not working and being repaired by
gateway very quickly, I have had no problem.
The other day, I wanted to check my battery, to see if It was part of
the recall.
I called the gateway phone number(not an 800) that is glued on the
laptop. The last time I called when I had the initial problem, I think I was
speaking with Texas, and I think thats where it went to get fixed.
Well calling the number, I get a recording on how this number is no
longer in service and to call this new number.
Well after three calls and three hangups, because I could not possibly
understand the tech on the other end, I finally got one I could understand.
And he had no clue, as to if the battery was on the recall list.
After telling me about four times to hang on, and going away for ten minutes
each time, he finally says the battery is okay and not to worry.
I tell him I am worried now, because I dont know if your giving me
correct information. I asked for an email confirming what he is saying,
incase there is an accident and I want a record of gateways affirmative on
the battery.
He said he couldnt do that, and then went back to some pre arranged
dialog, such as "have I solved your problem today" and so on.
I went online and went to a site that you plugged in your model and
number of your battery for a confirmation, and it gave it to me.
So the net result, is that one thing I liked about the gateway
laptop was english speaking support, and now it looks like its back in
calcutta or somewhere close by.
Looking for a laptop for the wife that will work good with
whiteboard.
Does Lenova outsource their tech. My wife would definately need tech
support that speaks english.
Much regards for the coming holiday season.

I haven't dealt with Lenovo tech support yet, only IBM's usually
English-speaking ones. Dell is a mix. If you call Dell during US business
hours, you end up with someone in India. If you call Dell during off hours,
the phone is often answered by someone speaking distinctly American English.
Almost everyone is outsourcing tech support overseas these days. The quality
really sucks... Ben Myers

As much as I detest some of their corporate practices, Sony tech support on |
my laptop has been excellent. They outsourced their USA tech support to the
United States. Every time I've ever called them I've spoken to someone in
California. The only time I ever sent it for repair they next day aired me
a well designed box to ship it to California in and I had it back in four
days. The only problem I had with them is, for some odd reason they have a
policy to format the hard drive and reinstall your OS back to factory
settings regardless of the original problem.
