Hi.
I have an old Toshiba Tecra 8000 with no CD drive and running DOS.
I'd like to install linux, and figure that the best way would probably
be through the USB.
The problem is that the USB is not enabled. I've tried various boot
disks and none seem to solve the the problem
I don't know what to do!
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

You need a CD drive badly if you want to install Linux from USB.

Enabled as it is disabled in the system setup or enabled as in you need
drivers?
If you just need the drivers, you should have no problem. Just boot the
Linux distribution of your choice from floppy and it will initialise the
USB controller on its own. Alternatively you can boot from DOS with
loadlin.
You have 3 options (i can think of now. There are hundreds) if the
controller is disabled and you can't enable it. 1) Install from HD to HD,
with either a loopback system or UMSDOS. Its tricky but possible. 2)
Install over network with a PCMCIA card or the serial port or modem.
Probably the best option, since you want to get a network card for it
anyway. 3) Remove the harddrive, put it in a 40 pin to 44 pin IDE adapter
and install the system on another PC, then put the drive back in.
