Every now and again, maybe once a month more or less,
when I boot up, I get a message the BIOS has lost it's
settings. I can either go reset them or hit F2 to use default
settings. So I reset everything and it's fine for another
good while.
Is this probably just a quirky battery or is something
more serious likely?

Try a new battery first, they're not expensive and there's a good chance it
will fix the problem. If it doesn't then ask here again.
