|
|
Hello everyone.
A friend recently bought an HP Pavilion Media Center TV m7645.tr
Desktop PC, on which he has not been able to get network and modem
devices to work under Windows XP Pro. HP's drivers do not seem to be
any good, and their support is not able to provide any solution. The
motherboard in the PC is an ASUS P5BW-LA, which is apparently a custom
production since I was not able to locate such a MoBo in ASUS' web
site.
I will appreciate very much any info on this MoBo (is it a renamed
actual ASUS model?) and which drivers I can use for it.
Many thanks in advance,

The network interface was difficult to figure out. The retail Asus
motherboards I looked at, use a separate LAN MAC/PHY chip. Presumably
to save a few bucks, by not buying an Intel Southbridge with
integrated Ethernet MAC. The P5BW-LA appears to use an 82562V 10/100
PHY chip, and connects to the MAC on the Southbridge. What I had to
do, is find an Intel branded motherboard on the Intel site, and
look for a board that uses the same trick (Intel PHY). That led me to
the Intel "Pro" driver. This is an ~88MB download, and I hope it is
the correct file. This one is for WinXP Pro.

The Intel DP965LT is the motherboard that had the closest implementation
to the LAN interface on the P5BW-LA.

As for a modem, that is probably a separate plugin assembly. I have
my doubts that will be traceable through the Asus site.
I would suggest hammering on the HP tech support. Make them
earn their money.
I don't see this board being similar to a retail Asus board.
The use of the Intel PHY chip seems to be atypical. Maybe
Asus started their design, with an OEM board designed for
someone else. Since Asus has contract manufactured boards
for Intel, it is possible this design is more Intel-influenced.
Asus doesn't generally do "all Intel chip" type boards, and
prefers to mix a little of everything.

HP uses PROPRIETARY Asus boards that are made for Asus specifically. All
you can do is use HP's custom drivers.

Dear Paul, I wanted to let you know that the drivers from the links you
sent worked fine. Many thanks again, and apologies everyone for the
repetitive posts - my connection to google had timed out several times
and I had assumed that the message would not have been posted - so
retried... But I was wrong.
