|

I need to set up cameras in several locations and monitor them from another
building. Have to use internet - can't use a wired connection or wireless.
I'm fairly computer-savy but never tried this. Anyone recommend a decent
program for this - preferably one with a trial period? Will the $19.99
webcams work for this?
Thanks in advance. |

This sounds too simple to me, but here's what I'm thinking.... connect a
garden variety camera with USB, then use an FTP program to automatically
upload the image JPG file every few seconds. If we keep the file name the
same each time, seems to me any webpage would work - only have to refresh it
to get the new image.
Anyone know an FTP program that will do this? |

I assume you mean webcam software that has FTP capabilities rather than |
an FTP program which is designed to send and receive files from an FTP
site, etc.
Most webcam software has FTP capabilities. Most have a trial period and
at least one I know of is free, although you do have to put up with them
occasionally putting their website address where your date/time stamp
is! It is also quite basic. I don't know if it is still available, but
do a search for VisionGS. I haven't used it for about 5 years.
Mostly I use Conquercam for FTP, simply because of it's low system
requirements. However it seems that it is no longer being updated to a
newer version.
Other Programs I use are WebcamXP and CaptureMax.
If you want to refresh an image every x seconds, you would keep the file
name the same so the new file would overwrite the old one as the webpage
would be looking to call a particular filename. Getting the viewer to
'hit refresh' to view the latest image is a pain in the neck and
personally I avoid those sites...along with ones that refresh the entire
page. Much better to use some Javascript to just refresh the new image.
If you look at the source code for my (not 'elegently' coded page :-)
), you will see what I mean!

Free script to do this is widely available on the Web. |
