|
|
I am so confused.
I was given a CREATIVE PC-DVD model DVD62340E, 6X.
I want to play a DVD with it, but I'm not sure what path to take.
I hooked up the drive and it plays CD's fine, but when I put a DVD in,
nothing.
So I upgraded to Win Media Player 9, which is the latest version that
works with win98SE, and it says "No Disk in Drive".
So I opened Real Player 10 and I click Play, and Play CD or DVD in
Drive E, and it says "Real Player needs to download new software to
play this clip" (So it's smarter than WMP, since it knows a DVD when
it has one.) So I click Yes and it hunts for the software and then it
dl's a 36K file called DVD Support PlugIn. But then it immediately
says: "You must have DVD software installed on your computer to play
DVDs. Please ensure that the DVD software that came with your computer
or DVD drive is properly installed, before attempting to play your
DVD" And when I click on that message, that's the end unless I try
again. Doesn't play.
When I click on "Tell me More" in the same box, it brings a webpage
that says:
| Quote: | Why won't my DVD or .VOB file play in RealOne Player?
RealOne Player is not able to find the software that came with your DVD drive.
In order for RealOne Player to play DVDs or VOB files, you must first
install the software that came with your drive. If you have already
installed this software, it may be experiencing problems and you may
need to reinstall it.
If you have been able to play DVDs or .VOB files on this computer prior to
receiving this message, restarting your computer may resolve your problem.
If you need a DVD decoder (hardware or software) you may be able to find an
appropriate decoder for you at one of the following sites:
Company Product/Link
National SemiConductor DVDExpress
MGI Software Corp. softDVDMax
Sonic Solutions Sonic CinePlayer
InterVideo, Inc. WinDVD
CyberLink Corp. PowerDVD
If you are still experiencing difficulties, please visit our Customer Support
at http://service.real.com

I searched the Creative site for DVD software, but there seems to be
none. Are they punishing me because I'm not the original purchaser?
What would happen if I was the original buyer but I lost or damaged
the CD that came with it?
I found a little software, but none whose name and description made it
sound right. I can print that info here if it will help.
I couldn't find an owner's manual for my model, but some manuals
referred to having a separate DXR2/DXR3 DVD Decoder Card. Do I need
one of those, or can I solve my problem with software?
To get software, I looked at the 5 websites in the list above, but
didnt' understand what I was seeing.
I googled for "PC-DVD player" and found a bunch of programs and
downloaded a few trial versions or shareware, but I don't know what is
good, or if any will solve my problem. boohoo.
Can you give me any guidance? Thanks.

Alternatively, can I use a Sigma Designs Hollywood Plus card, also
called a RealMagic EM8300?
I've found that I was also given one of those. When I looked at it a
few weeks ago, I had no idea what it was (I just thought it was a
fancy video card), but today, after I had posted late last night, it
came to mind. I found the card, and I have dl'd the manual, and the
drivers are there although the server is busy all day the moment.
It seems a cable goes from the video out of the video card to the
video in of this card, and from their to the monitor. Maybe a card
like that, which calls itself a DVD/MPEG-2** Playback Card, is an
alternative or a supplement?
**Isn't there MPEG 3 and 4 these days?

That type of card was needed when machines were slower and couldn't
handle the thru' put of a dvd movie.

I only have 800 MHz, and 512Meg Ram Am I in the slow days, or will I
be able to handle it with my CPU.

Not too much apparently. One extra cable, and this software. But if
I don't need it that's fine.

with a burner and needs that burner present to install. Note, once that
type of bundled software is installed it seems to run even when the
original device is removed, at least that's the case for my external LiteOn.

LOL. OK. I'll check.

To reply to myself: Actually, all I have to do is install one of the

I played dvds ok on a 500 MHZ 384 Meg pc; not a fireball, but tolerable.

You may already have the needed program. Media Player Classic, VLC
player, and Gomplayer, to name 3, should play dvds. These 3 come with
their own codecs, are all free, and the first 2 are open source. They
can usually play damaged files, which WiMP won't.
Good luck,

Good to know.
Similarly, I'm able to listen to web radio with a connection as slow
as 28K sometimes, and 32K and 40K usually works fine. A lot of people
with high speed think you can only do such things with high speed.
I tried Utube recently and there well designed software makes playing
with only dial up very easy. I'm not sure how much speed or ram you
need, but dialup is fine and it is worked out so you don't have to do
anything special. The progress bar makes everything clear.

Sounds good. When I have time on the weekend, I'll look for them.
The fact that a player can have its own codec is the reason I thought
REal and WMP would be all I need. That's half of the reason I was
confused. The other half was the references to those separate
decoding boards.

I'm going to look at this at the end of the day. Have to go to work
now.
But I wanted to report.
I looked into PowerDVD which was incredibly cheap, but two of the
companies didn't have any at the moment (Does that mean they'll never
get any more?) and regardless, I didn't want to just sit and wait
until someone mailed me a CD, even if it is better than what I could
dl right away.
I dl'd a variety of players that I found with google, and then went to
install them. I have win98SE and one said it only worked on
Win2000/Winxp. Another said only WinXP. (AVSDVD Player and I think
DirectDVD, but I don't recall which was which) A third one installed
but the two times I started it, it never fully started and it froze
the computer (WinXDVD). The fourth one has a garish orange display,
seemingly designed for people under 25, and teeny-weeny buttons to
click on, but it worked. Big Grin. DVDXPlayer
That is, I started it and then I started Real 10, and the movie played
fine, and in full screen. Later I tried playing the movie with only
Real, which certainly didn't work before, but this time it played, but
I couldn't get rid of a small control bar in the upper left of the
screen, or a control bar the whole width of the screen at the bottom.
One time I started the movie and got no sound, but I'm figuring that
was a fluke of some sort.
I went back to starting DVDXPlayer first and then Real, and again it
worked. I'm looking forward to watching the movie (which I now recall
I got with a box of breakfast cereal, but it looks good! Minnie
Driver.) I expect to have other DVD's in the future.
Thanks a lot for your help.
I have another project dealing with this newsgroup, but I want to try
to solve it myself first. I'll let you know.
OH, yeah, maybe you know about this. I tried playing an online radio
station, that i have played before, with this version of Real, but
these two times, it kept opening "Media Viewer" I think it was. I
didn't want to see anything, and it was labeled "ad". I kept closing
the window and it kept opening, 5 or 6 times each time. I went to
the Options but there are a lot of them, and if you know which one
will stop this it will save me time. Otherwise, I'll just go through
them all and try a bunch.

Both MPC and VLC are available on free-codecs.com. Both work on 98, are
available as zip files (don't like it? just delete it), and both look
similar to the old WiMP. MPC is smaller, if download time is a concern.
OTOH, VLC will play just about anything. Gomplayer, from gomplayer.com,
is fast, looks good, but needs at least 98SE.
Good luck

I have dial-up, but I don't mind going to sleep and letting something
finish. I also have a paid version of Getright, which has just about
every download feature I could ever want. It's free for trial.

I finally installed SE about a year ago.
