I'm running windows XP Pro, when trying to restore in system restore it goes
through the restore process then I get a message 'System could not be
restored to (date/time). Please select another restore point.' I have
tried disabling and enabling system restore a couple times but have the same
problem. Anyone have any other ideas. Tried searching windows knowledge
base but didn't find anything.
Thanks for any help

You cannot shut down System Restore temporarily. If you use Control
Panel to stop monitoring one or more drives, Windows deletes all saved
restore points on the selected drives. If you then reenable System
Restore monitoring, the deleted restore points are not re-created. |

I had that problem when my hard drive was dying. Didn't turn it off,
though, as that erases all your restore points, just tried every one that
was showing but none of them worked.

I know that when disabling system restore it deletes all the restore points,
after enabling it and waiting a couple days when windows creates new restore
points I still get the same error message. I think something must be
corrupted with my system restore files.

I did install Norton Internet Security 2006 last month, tried your
suggestion and so far it is working, thanks for your help I never would have
suspected NIS I've been using it for years.

the misc. settings of Norton. There is a checkbox that says 'protect my
norton product' or something like that. Uncheck it and try system restore
again. Apparently this is intended to prevent malicious software from
changing Norton in some way.

I wouldn't have either. I had seen it a few times before but the machines I
was working on had other problems so I never really persued it. This last
time I must have gotten the google search just right because the third or
fourth hit was a symantec support doc describing the problem.
