All at once this machine will turn on sometimes and others times it won't.
I have checked the on/off switch and it works (connected to another pc and
it works) would the power supply be the next place to check?

If you can borrow another compatible power supply in good condition, try it...

Thanks Ben. I have not had much experience with power supplies, but guess I
will learn. I punched the on button this morning and the thing started up.
That's the most confusing thing about this. One time it will start and
again it won't.

Well, the second thing to check is the motherboard, which is lots more
difficult.

The on-off switch can be checked by using another one temporarily, removed from
an old system put out to pasture. People, mostly my wife, wonder why I keep a
box of wire leads with LEDs and switches, stripped out of scrapped systems. In
a pinch, the on-off pins can be shorted out CAREFULLY with a small screwdriver.

It could be power, when you say it does not start up - does it start

at all? or the lights/fans come on for a sec and then give up?

I had a machine that did that - sometimes it would start fine, other
times it would "blink" but then turn itself off almost instantly. The
failures got more and more common, with the good starts rarer and
rarer. Once it did start, it would be as solid as a rock.

I did wonder about power and tried to disconnect most things not
absolutely key to the PC (extra HD's and disk drives etc) to see if
it would improve), but it did not fix or improve - it seemed as bad as
ever.

I noticed that when it blinked off - even the network card LED's
would go off (when you shut it down - they stay lit) so thought it
must be power or Motherboard.

With no spares to swap out and test - I guessed power. Put in a new
power supply and it has never missed a beat since.

HTH
Cheers
