Both ordered from Microdirect. Both show a green LED on the board which will not go out. Neither would boot worth a ***. Each with different processors, RAM, GFX cards and even hard disks and optical drives changed - i.e. eveything. Am I just unlucky or do socket 939 shuttles suck???

Sorry to hear you're having problems. I've got a SN21G5 with a single
stick of 1gig ram and an X2 4200 running perfectly. I've always had
issues with RAM makes with shuttle's, Crucial seem to work well with
nVidia based chipsets. Have you tried running it without the GFX card
and using onboard instead?

Maybe try a bare CPU+RAM config and see if it POSTS.

You may be right on both counts. When I connected up the onboard graphics via vga it fired up and actually made it to windows before halting - after that it accepted my GFX card via DVI no problem. When I swap my ram around that affects it too. It will not boot with 1x1GB double sided installed, but 512 PC2700 branded (333Mhz) works for about 30 mins. Then I tried 512 MB PC3200 oem (400Mhz) and so far so good! I have ordered 2x512MB Elixir PC3200 sticks - hope it likes the taste of those. What a fussy blooming thing it is.

With Shuttles, I've always found them to be picky with RAM makes and
types. Luckily at work, we have an abundance of different makes - and
abit of money to spend smile - so I can try out different variations.
NVidia chipsets seem to be the pickiest, but Crucial memory works pretty
much 100%.
