|
|
I tried to boot *** Small Linux from a CD but it failed sometime in
the middle of the process. I hit the reset button to start over and now
I cannot use my CD-ROM. It will not boot from the CD drive and even in
Windows if I put in a music CD it makes sounds like it's looking for
something then ejects. Was something of the failed boot saved in some
persistent CD drive storage? How do I get my CD-ROM back from the dead? |

I don't think you can blame Linux..... sounds like a common fault where the disc is not being read due to dust on the laser lens or possibly the laser diode or it's sensor going duff.
I would be tempted to try the unit by substitution one way or the other it least it will prove the unit guilty or not.
Normally with Audio CDs when the laser loses emission or the lens become clogged with dirt you'll get skipping and jumping... a bit like a guy with a duff mike lead as it swings about, don't forget there is a prism inside the unit to seperate the laser beam from the return beam these can become contaminated and you'll get a poor beam to the disc and a poor beam back... the loss is doubled on the return beam as it has already been attenuated going to the disc, laser is polarised light.

I was wondering if it could be something stored in the CMOS. Maybe the
CMOS is trying to pick up where it left off. I don't know, really. If
the thing is dirty, how do I clean it? |

audo stores.

Sorry forgot about this post.
I doubt it as CMOS settings are really never altered unless you go into BIOS, if you can see the drive in the bios window then all should be well here.
Maybe trying a restore to an earlier date before this happened might help.
wonder why I didn't suggest this the first instance.... "er.. sorry about that".
