|
|
I'm about to put a medium duty server together and am new to SAS (serial
attached SCSI) and the difference between on-board controllers and add-in
cards.
I'm looking at a Tyan n6650W (S2915) S2915WA2NRF Motherboard with a LSI
1068E on-board SAS controller.
The other option is a similar Tyan board S2915A2NRF that comes without the
SAS controller to which I would add in an Adaptec 4805 PCI Express SAS Raid
controller.
....although I could still change my mind about mainboards, etc.
As near as I can tell, the on-board option supports raid 0 and 1, but not
10, which is likely what I want.
The Adaptec card supports multiple raid types including 10, but is about
$700.
If I definitely go with Raid 10, it looks like the on-board controller
option is out. If I go with another raid type, I can still consider it.
Another option is a Tyan h2000M motherboard (that will handle more memory),
which has an optional SAS controller add-in card (M9000-10) that will handle
RAID 10 for about $100. From what I gather, this card is a PCIx and not
PCIe, however.
....but I am wondering about other pros and cons to on-board versus add-in.
If I understand correctly, the PCIx RAID cards might not be able to handle
the max bandwidth of 4 15K SAS drives, but the PCIe cards will. I don't know
what to expect from the on-board controllers.
Could someone point me in the right direction?
Jeff

Why not?
(Even 'standard' 66Mhz 64-bit PCI (~500MB/s) may well support it).
PCI-X has many flavors ....

.... as does PCIe.
Only difference is that PCI-X maybe be running out of future whereas
PCIe is the future. But PCI-X is still way ahead of current use/need.

What it says in the user manual.
