|
Hello,
A few weeks ago, I noticed my Toshiba SD-M1612 16X/48X ATAPI/IDE drive
would not want to read an inserted CD/DVD (I forget which) properly. It
didn't matter if it was new and old. I tried to eject it, but the drive
refused. I tried the drive's eject button and Windows Explorer's eject.
I didn't bother to do the paper clip hole method at that time. I
shrugged and I waited a few hours to try again. It worked when I tried
again.
The second time was on 10/29/2006, it happened again. I investigated so
I checked out Windows XP's event logs:

I thouht that was odd, but why can't I eject my drive? So, I rebooted,
but the drive wouldn't eject. So, I decided to reboot. Nope, it didn't
eject when I was at the BIOS bootup. BIOS did show my DVD drive
correctly, so I assume it saw it fine. So, I tried turning off the
system and turning back on. So, I was able to eject at this point.
However today, the drive will not open anymore. Reboots, power off
system, Explorer's eject, eject button drive, etc. didn't work. So, I
tried the paper clip method. No dice as well after several attempts. I
didn't hear any noises either. All I see when I press eject button is
blinking lights for like five seconds, and solid for a second, and gives
up. Doing it through is like three times lognerI wonder if the motor
died or something.
I rechecked my event logs, I had no errors from today's incident because
I had no CD/DVD in the drive (good thing -- don't have to worry about
ejecting it if I am going to toss this drive). According to the logs, I
had cdrom errors (like above) on 10/29/2006, 10/28/2006, 10/22/2006, and
9/25/2006. A couple said like:

system specifications can be found here:

OLDER Plextor drive has no problems to eject.
Thank you in advance.

What will that do? I will try your idea later since I don't feel like
shutting down at the moment.
I do have news. After I woke up this morning, I tried the DVD-ROM
drive's eject button again and it worked just fine. I decided to play
Battlefield 2, inserted its DVD, it ran, played for a few minutes, etc.
I tried to eject the DVD after exiting the game and it refuse to come
out.
Since it ate my DVD, I tried to eject with the paper clip method again,
it sort of worked. The drive drawer(?) came out a little, but I had to
pull it out manually. I tried to close the drive with the eject button,
that didn't work. I also tried pushing it to see if it closes
automatically, and that didn't work either. I had to manually push it in
to close.
It looks like the motor is dead/having problems. What do you think?

One last thing: remove the ribbon cable and then power up the
computer. Then see if the eject button works.

No, you should listen to Andy. What he suggests will tell you if the |
drive itself is ok. Now as far as the cd not ejecting, I was getting a
lot of that although I haven't noticed it lately. It was more prevalent
with the some application install cd's. It has something to do with the
os/application retaining control of the drive. However, the problem
would fix on a reboot.
I have found a way around the reboot. I launch my record now software
and select exact copy, go thru' most of the machinations but cancel
without actually doing the copy. At that point the record now software
has taken control of the drive and I can eject. Now I am writing this I
wonder if just trying to copy files from the cd in windows explorer
might also release control.
Good luck,

How can it be software related when I still have this problem in BIOS
setup? I haven't even booted up an operating system (Windows XP). :)
I have not tried the ribbon yet.

No, you should listen to Andy. What he suggests will tell you if the
drive itself is ok.
Good luck,
Dave Cohen
How can it be software related when I still have this problem in BIOS
setup? I haven't even booted up an operating system (Windows XP). :)
I have not tried the ribbon yet.

If you still have the problem in BIOS then it's not same as my problem.

Funny, the last two days have been working and then not working. Mostly,
it is not working. Right now, it is working for who knows how long. It
doesn't matter if there is a DVD/CD in the drive or not. I just see no
patterns. What do you guys think it is?
I was going to try the ribbon thing but the drive works now. Have to
wait until it is not working again. Grr!

| Quote: | I thouht that was odd, but why can't I eject my drive?

So, is my drive dead/broken? I have had since early 2003, so it is not
that old. Maybe I used it too much? Mainly listening to MP3s on CD-Rs,
watching DVDs, playing games that requires their CDs/DVDs, etc. My
system specifications can be found here:
http://alpha.zimage.com/~ant/antfarm/about/computers.txt ... Also, my
OLDER Plextor drive has no problems to eject.
Thank you in advance.
