Did you install the latest via 4 in 1 (hyperion) drivers?

I've had two PT800CE boards, one of which I sold separately and the
other part of a system. They didn't like 1GB memory modules I tried
and seemed to be flakey with ATI R9600 AGP cards that worked perfectly
in other motherboards. Otherwise, they ran just fine with 512MB
modules, ATI Radeon 8500, and Radeon 9250.

yes i did the 4 in 1 drivers, and i have tried different memory , video
cards etc , still kind of flakey--the dang bios was 2004!!! flashed to the
latest of course, still weird stuff - doesn't seem to like some 512 mem and
the mem slots are very hard compared to most--tempted to return but i am
still whacking away at it thanks alot pete

has found 40 errors in 5 tests? will remove the 512 kingston value ram and
run again , i believe the other 512 is an older Apacer module - looks like
at least one bad ( but in my older machine ecs intel chipset ICH5 no prolems
but never bothered to check the mem). looks as if this VIA chipset is just
too picky on the memory??? wish i knew how severe this errors really are??

You get any errors from memtest and it is severe. Tweak the memory
settings in the bios, and run memtest until the errors are gone. Use one
stick first, remove it, then try the other. try each memory slot. Via
chipset are actually very memory tolerant, but some motherboard just do
not like some memory combinations, while others have no problems.

Any error is severe, a chance for corruption of many things, including
files on your HD. You might try using more relaxed memory settings to
see if that resolves the errors, or use "SPD" for memory settings or
"auto" if such a setting is found. I'm an AMD guy, nothing but Athlon
CPUs here, oh, and an old PII 400 Mhz Pentium that is collecting
cobwebs right now.

thanks for the help!! after 6 hrs of the test on both sticks, i had 120
errors. am running one stick now and will see what happens, all bios
settings are auto by spd. did you see my earlier post about the
speed/advantage of a single sata drive running in the ide mode vrs. a plain
old ide?? thanks again pete

No. But in the general scheme of things, it does not make mucvh
difference if you go IDE or SATA. Benchmarks say the SATA drives are a
little faster, but in the real world, there is no noticable difference.
IDE drives are more mature and cheaper, so that is why I still use them.
I am sure with enough tweaking, you will get a stable memory combination.
I had a memory stick that would work on nothing, was close to trashing it.
I put it in a via chipset, and tweaked the bios settings for the most
stable. It works. Moral of the story is rarely is they bad memory, just
incompatable memory.

hi brian, i think that dispite the errors in memory ( they all run fine in
the 848 ICH5 intel ECS board w/ide drives) i am alright now just have to
figure out how to wake the machine up after a 20 hr. sleep?? i believe that
the ECS boards are not good running ide and sata's together, in fact , tech
support told me that on my older machine(pt848) with the ICH5 intel chipset
had a hardware incompatability running both--in fact i could not ever get it
to run a sata even though all hardware and bios settings were tried-tech
support said no wayhardware incompatability, but this pt 800CE is supposed
to but i think there is the real prob. sis sandra shows no mem probs ect. my
old machine runs any of the memory rock solid for 3 years overclocked! the
speed thing bothers me on the ide vrs sata without raid--i bought a sata for
the speed alone , like you said a little difference can be seen but for the
money if no raid ide is fine any thoughts??
thanks again pete

Intel ICH5 does have some kind of limitation with running integrated
SATA together with the integrated Primary IDE channel (can't be used at
the same time or something). Can't remember the specifics, but ECS
wasn't trying to shift blame away from its motherboard, at least not on
that issue.
Regards,
Tim
