The hard drive in my 450X laptop just died and was replaced under warranty.
The new drive is much noisier than the old one, lots of tickety tickety
sounds. Should I worry about it or just be cool and keep things backed up
(always a good idea). My extended warranty ends in December. |

Yes, Worry and always backup even if it isn't noisy. I keep the "My
Documents" folder backed up daily while I do a Ghost backup Image of
the whole HD on every M$ Black Tuesday right before implementing my
choice of their month's grab-bag of M$ updates..
My 450SX4 went through 4 hard drives under warranty. The 5th HD
failure was after the warranty ran out and on my dime and that one
drive is still going strong. Just for the record, the drive I
purchased on my own dime was not purchased from the Sales and
Marketing firm known as Gateway but from a local White Box vender.
That drive has lasted 4 times as long as all 4 of the warranty
replacements I got from the Sales and Marketing firm known as Gateway.
Just for your information......... Make out of it what you wish but
it tells me volumes......

And it will probably fail so just be prepared. The "Good" drive that
I got, the one that didn't come from the Sales and Marketing Firm
known as Gateway cost me $117. But the length of time it has lasted
(and still going strong) was worth every cent compared to replacing
the GW warranty units every 7-8 months.
BTW, the one I purchased on my own is a Teak. I forget what GW was
sending under warranty.

I'm not the expert advice you're seeking, but I'd definitely worry too.

Thanks for the input, that is much as I suspected. I recently purchased an
external drive so will be doing backups. I always have kept backups of data
which for me is most photos and the few databases for programs I use like MS
Money and my calendar program. But it sure would be a timesaver to just
restore a nice image instead of reinstalling everything.
Did you notice any difference in the noise factor among the various hard
drives?

Ed... I Understand you had problems. And you have been through a lot.
But you have to understand that Gateway probably got a bad lot from
somewhere. And I would guess they got a deal on them and they can't get
their money back on them either. Too bad you can't tell us the
manufacture of those HD. As I really would like to know.
I owned five 2.5 inch drives so far and only the one from '91 quit right
away. And the replacement I got was one that said Prototype on it with
all of the seals broken and many bad sectors on the drive (it's an IDE
one too). I called up and complained.and the engineer asked if any new
ones showed up and I said no (I'm an engineer too). So he said what is
the big deal and I said okay, but if anything changes I will call back.
To this very day it is still working fine (well counting the
replacement, it would be 6 drives).
And I have one Gateway MX6124 laptop and the hard drive and everything
else is doing fine. <grin> Although by next month I might join you ok?

Remember, Gateway does not make computers much less handle them and/or
any of the components making up a computer. They are a Sales and
Marketing Firm posing as a computer manufacturer which drop ships
systems with their name plopped on the box out of Taiwan and China and
supported by Rha-Ul in India. I seriously doubt that they would know
a computer if one jumped up and bit them in the arse unless someone
still works for them that was around in the mid 90's when they at
least assembled some of their systems in the US.
My Multi HD problem was due to units that were 3rd tier units bought
up in mass by the Taiwanese supplier for Gateway. The one that I
bought out of warranty was a 1st tier unit and not one that had failed
1st and 2nd tier QA and sold on pallet sales to Asian suppliers. For
Example, two of the failed warranty replacements were very notably
used units with one even having a recycle sticker on it.
| Quote: | Too bad you can't tell us the

|
I really wish I remembered but I don't think it really matters. The
problem was not the brand but the level of QA Passage they were
released under that was the problem. Like I said, all the Big Box
Sales and Marketing Firm's replacement units are 2nd and 3rd tier
units with a lot of remans and/or used units. Also, one of the
warranty replacements came as a 1/2 height desktop unit. Remember,
this was a replacement for a Laptop unit. Remember when I said they
wouldn't know a computer if one jumped up and bit them in the arse....
proof said.... Kind of hard cramming a 1/2 height into a laptop.
There have been stories on this exact forum where warranty replacement
components arrived as used or reman replacements. The best one was a
replacement monitor for a brand new system where the monitor arrived
DOA (how do they pass QA if they don't turn them on at the
manufacturer is beyond me, but...). Anyway the replacement for the
brand new DOA unit came as a used unit all scratched up and smelling
of cigarette smoke. The Gateway Sales and Marketing Firm said that
they reserved the right to send used and/or Remanufactured units as
replacements... That that was part of warranty agreement you agree to
when buying from them. Even for a Brand New Never Used Unit being
Replaced.

Go knock on some wood. I had to replace the HD in my White Box tower.
It was 7 years old when it gave up the ghost and I replaced it with a
"Brand New", "First Tier", "Unused", "UnRemanufactured" replacement
which I'll bet will last as long if not longer than the one it is
replacing. BUT!!!! I have a Gateway Essential 500 bought in 1999 that
is still running strong with all its original components. The only
reason I keep it around is it was one of the last systems that Gateway
assembled in the US and actually supported out of the US before they
turned into a Sales and Marketing Firm selling boxes out of China and
Taiwan and supported out of India. Its almost as good a quality as my
White Box systems are today.
In closing, I don't think the replacement components quality have
anything to do with brand name. It has everything to do with which
shelf they were pulled from in China and Taiwan. Bulk Pallet loads of
2nds and 3rds on the QA test and or remans/used units don't get it.

Ed |

Laptop drives are pretty much physically interchanagble as long as they are the
same type. The older parallel ATA 2.5" notebook drives still predominate, with
the newest serial ATA starting to make inroads.
I cannot recommend a place to buy, but I have strong recommendations as to the
brands to buy:
1. Fujitsu
2. Seagate
3. Hitachi
4. Others
5. Toshiba (NEVER!!!!)
I think that says it all... Ben Myers

Newegg.com has an excellent reputation and a liberal return policy.
But don't take my word for it, Google around and see what people have to
say about them.
